State of the Writer: May 2024!

    Didn't write nothing! clapping emoji!

My surgery was on the 22nd, and it went well, I'm still in recovery for technically the next week and a half or so, but as of this week I'm already feeling back to normal. Which I have to keep reminding myself I am not, lest I overdo something and hurt myself. <_< I am at least following the discharge instructions, so no worries about that.

    PP vs. What I've Become

Knight Breeze's What I've Become might not be a name you've heard before, but given its stats, especially the over 60,000 views, I feel safe calling it a fandom classic. :) Major spoilers ahead for a ten-year-old story!

Fic recs, May 20th: Project Get! #17!

Hey! :D Welcome back to Project Get!, where I sort my RIL by views and grab the last 10 on the list that aren't sequels, unfinished, or by the same author twice! I've been trying to do this a lot more frequently, but 'frequent' has not exactly described these blogs out of me, has it? D: I dunno if that could change in the near future. I've got outpatient surgery on Wednesday this week, so I'm

This blog explains it quite well, but go help Regidar see his fiance!

Midnight29 has done a reading of Twinkletail's A Hiccup in Reality! And VisualPony has done readings of Godzillawolf's A Simple Morning and FuzzyFurvert's Drop Bombs and Float On!

So, being in this fandom, we all know a lot of stuff about friendship and the things that it is, right? Well, another of those things is friendship is pain. x_x I dropped everything today to go help a friend clean up his place ahead of more friends coming to visit (friend has not been feeling well, house is a mess), and then after walking back and forth across town, I went grocery shopping so I won't have to rush through it ahead of said friend meeting tomorrow, and now my everything hurts! :') But it's worth it.

Applejack has been missing school, and while Rarity may not be her friend, she's going to help.
If you see a sad tag on a story about filly Applejack, you know it's going to be about just one thing. Well, here at least, that thing is included, but this is about a lot more. There's tons of incidental world-building to center later canon in the history we first experienced through Cutie Mark Chronicles. There's a ton of solid child logic, as we're in little Rarity's head the entire time, and she's having a hard time figuring out and understanding what's going on. And there's that Romance tag, which is pulling double duty. Yes, this is about a schoolyard crush, but Rarity is also a capital-R Romantic, and we're shown this was true from an early age. The through-door conversation was marvelously frustrating, and it was only after it was finished that I realized there was an entire other situation at play here. All in all, a very good effort, and I can't think of a reason not to recommend it.

Working Title by Dai Kirai
Reading by VisualPony
Genre: Self-Insert OC
By this point, we all know the baggage related to self-inserts, such that I needn't go through it. Which is good, because honestly? This isn't bad. It's kind of a standard story wherein the pony world and human world are swapped around. His roommate's are obviously based on the author's, for instance. Moreso, he's a fan of My Little Human, which, yes, is a joke I've seen before. But in this case, the amount of incidental detail the author put into the show made me actually want to know more about it? I would read an entire longfic about a show whose main characters are trying to "bring harmony to a world that doesn't want it". Like, isn't that just a fantastic premise? Way more effort was put into this than I would have expected, and while it sort of front-loads the story with the really cool stuff, I haven't got a word to say against it.

Fluttershy just doesn't feel like she really fits into Twilight and Rarity's relationship.
As An Old™, I am continually struggling to catch up on All This Queer Stuff, but I'm trying. One of the things that continue to baffle me to this day? How an asexual person can be in a relationship, especially with someone who isn't. Now, it was maybe asking a bit much for this story to answer that question for me, since I don't think that was the author's intention. Plus, this being a polycule, it's not like Fluttershy's partners lack options for levels of intimacy she's not comfortable with. Putting all that aside, what this does offer, alongside good character writing and a strong dynamic between the three main characters, is good poly shipping. I'm always harping on about how important communication is in relationships, and in this case, we really see that that includes being willing to bring things to a partner's attention, something Fluttershy is unsurprisingly bad at. Other than that, this is positive and cute, and totally worth reading, especially if you like seeing more than two ponies in a relationship. :)

Sugar Belle's Tale by Tennis Match Fan
Reading by Midnight29
Genre: Episode Followup
This is a pretty simple but solid story about Sugar Belle's cutie mark and history. I don't have a lot to say about it, really, save that picking just Pinkie and Fluttershy to react opposite her was a good choice, and they're both used well. Really, this would be best utilized, I think, as the start of a series, or the first chapter in a longer story where we just get the cutie mark stories of all four of the main cultists, but as a standalone? It's not bad!

If you ask me, the real joke here is lesbians, but the actual punchline is delivered quite excellently and was pretty darn funny. Overall, a good time!

The Jewel of Corruption by Kagekitsune
Reading by VisualPony
Genre: World-Building/Inu Yasha Crossover
I tried watching Inu Yasha once upon a time. It seemed like an enjoyable shounen anime, right up until the episode where the big jewel thingy cracks into a million pieces and is scattered across the land. Right then, I knew the rest of the series was going to be a million fetch quests, stretching out the run for as long as possible, as they tried to locate every single shard, and I dropped it. All of which is to say, I don't remember a ton about the show, and while I do feel like the author's claim that this is accessible to anyone who doesn't know Inu Yasha at all is correct, it also just… didn't need to be a crossover? The core concept here is actually great, and I really liked watching the first scene play out. It just could have happened with a completely original concept as well; the corrupting force being from Inu Yasha adds nothing to the overall story. Also, I really wish it had been longer, and gone into the other origin stories in as much detail as the first, because they all sounded interesting. In the end, I feel like this is a really good idea, but it's mostly just an idea more than a story.

Ooh, yeah Truthfully does it's job well.:raritycry::heart:

Haha, and that happens really early on, too. Yeah, it's one of those series that could draw out as long as it cared to, but I did like it.

I had seen a few animes by that point, I knew what was going on. :V

I would watch 300 episodes of Bleach many, many years later. :B

367 to be exact, where it just cuts off. But there's a sequel now, and season 2 comes this summer! Plus they did a spin-off miniseries that might continue.

Thanks for the high praise!
