"Be good to yourself, because nobody else has the power to make you happy."

E

When Twilight gets an advance preview of what she'll look like a few years after ascending the throne, she is not impressed. Can a certain special (soon to be not so) little guy help her see the future might not all be that bad, after all?

Let's find out, shall we?

Personally if I were Spike I’d be more worried over the weird jawline.

Cute! And happy early birthday! :pinkiehappy:

Happy birthday mate. And the story looks baller.

Also...

“Yes, you get to have my old bedroom! You know, in addition to my sister’s.” Luna completed Celestia’s sentence, beaming as if she’d relayed some special announcement.

* bow-chicka wow-wows until the heat death of the universe :trollestia:

He'll still keep in contact with his pen pal.

:twilightoops: Rarity why?
:duck: I called first dibs
:twilightangry2: But they could of gotten hurt
:moustache: Actually she said "one move and the turkey birb gets it"
:facehoof: and?
:pinkiehappy: and they all lived together as one happy herd
:twilightoops: Is that Legal?
:moustache: It's good to be the KING!

“To be that monstrosity, is this truly my fate?”

“Why are my legs so long and thin?”

“Why is my mane blowing, when there’s no breeze?”

“Why do I have to be so incredibly tall?”

"I won't fit in my bed! How will I sleep?"

“Look at me! This is wrong, wrong, wrong!”

This is just like reading the comments section for any video of "The Last Problem." :rainbowlaugh:

Personally, I had no real issue with Twilight, shall we say, growing into the role. I mean, I don't know why viewers expected anything different, really. Given everything else we know about the universe, it did seem like the logical thing to expect. Plus it also made her look properly older as the time jump would dictate. Imagine if she still looked basically the same instead... :twilightoops:

The jawline is a bit weird...recently saw a pic someone had drawn of Future Spike without that pronounced jawline and it makes way more of a difference than I would've thought it would.

I think I'd be more willing to roll with it if we had some suggestion in Spike's youthful design that he'd inherit such a chin later down the line, but you don't really, so it does seem a little...out of place.

Other than that, again, I have no real issue with their future designs.

10343367
Well if Spike doesn’t seem to mind it, I suppose I can live with it :moustache:

10343497
Thanks. The more candles I have to blow out, the more depressed I am... :fluttershbad: still, my choice to ‘waste’ my time on a pastel pony cartoon, so no regrets :trollestia:

10343559
He better. Or that would be just plain rude. :pinkiegasp:
10343575
I thought I’d try something different, so... poetry. Totally makes sense, right? :twilightblush:

10343575
The angular-ness of the jawline contrasts with the soft lines in most character designs, I think is what is jarring about it. Not an artist, though, so your mileage may vary. You got a link to this no-angle version?

10343756
I thought somebody might ask for that, so much so I probably should've followed my gut and posted a link in my first comment preemptively anyway. :rainbowlaugh:

Ze requested linky-link

Looking at it again now, I suppose Spike's still got a little chin, but nowhere near as much as he did in "The Last Problem," so definitely still toned waaaaay down.

10343766
Oh... yeah that's much better. I'd have been less annoyed at scenes he was in if he looked like that.

10343776
Although...it's just now occurred to me that giving the Spike the chin might've been meant as a throwback--a certain season 1 fantasy of Spike's did have him giving himself that big chin way back then. :raritywink:
vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/79/Spike_in_his_imagination_S1E19.png/revision/latest?cb=20110419145640
Still...I agree giving him the big chin in the finale probably wasn't the smartest of moves, character-design-wise. But again for the record, that's really the only issue I have with any of the future cast designs...other than giving the rest of the Mane 6 those bags under the eyes only makes them look tired and not really so much older. :rainbowlaugh: But, y'know, splitting hairs and all that.

10343790
Oh it almost certainly was a throwback. But as Quibblepants might say, I still don't like it. :P

Designs ran the gammut for me. AJ, RD, and Fluttershy's designs were fine, Rarity's was a bit odd but we were seeing her in wintery garb. Pinkie's mane was just... what? though. I kinda see what they were going for, but there is no way that mane could stay like that.

The bags were, of course, problematic. It's unclear whether that was a writer or animator decision.

I felt Twilight's design wasn't differentiated enough from Celestia's. Not fond of the Big Twilight idea in general tbh.

“At least Luna, Celestia, and Cadance, as far as I know, were born into this form! Me? I was a humble unicorn librarian, who later became an alicorn princess, and now I’m as good as queen! Each time, getting bigger, more powerful, with an ever-changing psychique! I’d be surprised if I didn’t get whiplash at the speed of my evolution, but this latest transformation really takes the cake! D-Do you think I’m really cut out for…” Twilight’s voice trailed off there. With the rapid pace of change in her life and so much pressure piling on her soon-to-be widened shoulders, she seemed close to tears.

WHEN THE BUCK WAS CADANCE EVER SAID TO BE A NATURALLY BORN ALICORN?! No really. When was that ever said? Celestia, Luna, and Flurry Heart are the only natural alicorns in Equestria.

10344047
Arguably, the show never explicitly said she wasn't either... :raritywink:

But yeah, the expanded canon has generally supported that, like Twilight, Cadance became an alicorn after the fact, and this has been widely accepted as basically canon by the fanbase, in light of the show never saying otherwise, at least.

With how Twilight looked up to Celestia, possibly even more than her mom, I thought she'd like looking more like 'ol Sunbutt. Maybe she'll get used to it, even if the fans never fully will.

I still remember how my mouth dropped the first time the older and bigger Spike and Twilight were on screen.

10344047

10344075
Well I actually looked this up before publishing the story, and as Scyphi said I couldn't find any evidence that she wasn't a natural born alicorn. But if this 'expanded canon' says she was, then it's a simple matter to edit that part. Thanks for drawing it to my attention. :scootangel:

10344095
Yes, I saw it spoiler-free too... and I'm glad I did. The effect wouldn't have been half as dramatic if I hadn't. :twilightoops:

10344146
Expanded canon makes more sense anyway. The show might not have ever said it, because Cadance never did get enough love.

But that she is an ascended alicorn, like Twilight, was confirmed as her official backstory by one of the show writers.

10343628
It's not too late for them,

Personally, I thought Twilight's design was fine, in the abstract. It's graceful and imposing, as ponies expect from their princesses. It's nice that she finally got the squared-off alicorn muzzle and the animate, sparkly mane briefly glimpsed in, e.g., Twilight's Kingdom. And most importantly, her wingtips no longer stick up at an awkward angle when folded, but are finally in proportion to her form.

It just doesn't seem like enough time should have passed for her to grow quite that large. The timeskip can't have been much longer than twenty years. That's about a fifth of the time Luna spent ruling alongside Celestia before her banishment, and about twice the time between Twilight hatching Spike and The Ending of the End. In a hundred and change years, Luna grew into about half Celestia's height; in about five years, Cadance grew from a normal pegasus model with a horn on it (Twilight at least got a proper redesign right after her ascension!) to about the same shape and somewhat shorter stature than Luna. Twilight's growth spurt is out of all proportion. Her model should have been based on Cadance's (perhaps a smidge less svelte, Twilight was always the pudgiest alicorn that didn't have baby fat), but with the flowing mane.

I, for one, am fine with tall Twilight.

10344615
I had no problem with it either. I just thought adjusting to her new appearance would make for an interesting fic. That's it. :twistnerd:

10344257
Just going to point out with how often the show writers changed or have had semi different opinions as well as said things the show later proves wrong i wouldn't fully trust word of god as canon.

Personally agree with her being an ascension like twilight but the show is the only set canon overall so don't see an issue with if the writer wants her to be naturally born since the show didn't say one way or the other.

10344364
Or maybe Luna's just short for her age. :rainbowlaugh:

Whatever the case, it's a fair point, but veers into details canon never covered, so we can only speculate at best. :applejackunsure:

10344364
I think some people said it was more maybe because of all the power she’s channelling. Shrug

10354432
That would sound like they indeed channel Warp energy :P

10344364
My head canon in regards to alicorn size has always been: accumulated magic.
Twi's cutie mark appears to be more related to quantity, and her constant studying takes care of the quality of her magics. She is not a natural born spell hacker like Glimmer. Ever since the other throne warmers dumped their magic on her I had assumed that she'd eventually become more powerful and godlike than even Celestia by a serious margin.
As for their respective body heights ... well, what does Celestia do with all the magic she has? Barely anything. She moves a celestial body twice a day. And celestial magic is kind of her special talent.
Luna on the other hand moves the moon, thousands of stars, and then spends the entire night in the dream realm. She uses up far more of her magic on a daily basis than any other princess. Twily doesn't even need to deal with a celestial body she has no affinity for like Celestia had to. With her enchanted crown all she has to do is pour some magic into it and the job gets done in the most power efficient way possible. So no wonder she turned into Tia 2.0 in 20 years or less.
In the prologue Luna and Celestia were depicted as being equal in body height and Luna had grown quite a bit compared to her magic-drained state in Ep.2 ... so I believe that at some point Luna was and eventually will be the same height as Celestia again.
The sparkly flowing mane seems to require a certain amount of magical power to manifest. That would explain why Twi's alicorn mane was setting in earlier than Cadie's despite the age difference. We know it's not even limited to alicorns and, I mean, S9 GlimGlam could probably out-magic LoveButt^^.
