SPark

Not checking in here. I may post stories because my patrons are nice and like ponies. Otherwise out of the fandom, sorry peeps.

An old gray mare walks down an ancient turnpike, and encounters a unicorn named Luna, standing at a crossroads. Across a land without sun or moon, their paths bend inescapably together beneath strange, wrong stars that may soon be right.

Edited by the always-awesome Jordanis.

With extra love for Cynewulf, without whose marvelously weird Hell Ain't Half Full Yet, this story would never have begun.

Had some fun editing this one. Looking forward to seeing it all up.

"Turnpike" in the description is very odd, to me.

I recognize in some parts of America is is used to mean "The Road", but that usage comes from "The Barrier on a Toll-Road", and before that, "A spiked wall laid across a road, as a defensive vantage against advancing armies".

An Ancient Turnpike, therefore, is essentially a gate across a road, rather than the roadside stop the story actually evoked.

I apparently was misinformed, as I had been told that a "turnpike" was a road with barriers along the sides, as in the hedges in this specific case.

The plot thickens...

This honestly kinda feels like a Salvador Dali painting in horror(?) fic form. Very discomforting and but interesting all the same.

I will take that as high praise! :pinkiehappy:

"That is not dead which can eternal lie,” murmured Luna.

Sidenote: hopefully I'm not mistaken, but the excerpts from Whiffletree's book are based on Biblical passages, right? That's a pretty cool inclusion; I haven't read a lot of horror stories that do this.

Biblical and in one case the Doctrine and Covenants, which is Mormon scripture. It seemed like a fun way to draw on Luna's past, given that she's often treated as a goddess. So why not scripture?

Outstanding atmosphere throughout the story.

The dialog was also great. My favorite character had to be Cotton Candy. She stole both scenes where she appeared.

Thank you! She was way too much fun.

Weird literary flex, but ok.

Really enjoyed the story because it's one of those where you have genuinely no idea where it's going. 👍

The British word for a path like that, particularly one so worn down as to be below the surrounding ground level would be "holloway."

That's the sort of image that was in my mind as I read.

This story is so damned wonderful in so many ways. The slightly "elevated" language that shapes the tone, the Lovecraftian (in a Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath way) imagery that sets the stage for a story of mortal divinity, and the slow assembling of diverse incidentals that build to a perfect mandala of meaning at the end.

All that, and it's a quintessential and satisfying pony story.

just... wow! :heart::twilightsmile::heart:

That is high praise, especially coming from you! Thank you!

First time I've added a story to my "Top Favorites" shelf in years!

Why thank you!

And now all is revealed. This has been an interesting little journey. Thank you for providing it.

I say Whiffletree volunteering to be the sacrifice, but I don't see what this place is, where it is in Luna's timeline, or where it goes from here. Two chapters to go though ...

I'd thought that Whiffletree might have been Celestia, but once she'd been sacrificed that was it. Wasn't expecting this.

One chapter to go ...

The ending made surprising sense - a really enjoyable story. :0
