Discord's history with his adoptive siblings... and the time they called him a monster

Discord grows up as an honorary sibling of Celestia, Luna and Cadance, they are all very close and do almost everything together. Until the day Celestia (and sort of Luna) calls him a monster. (this also involves a reason why Luna became Nightmare Moon around the same time, but I don't full explain that, you have to figure it out, but it shouldn't be to hard:raritywink:). I do not own the cover art.

*All characters belong to their respective parties*

Discords statue hit the ground with a thud. In their shock at what the Elements had done to Discord neither of them used their magic to stop his fall.

“N-no, h-he can't be s-s-stone. I-I-we” Luna broke down into heart wrenching tears as she sobbed onto her downcast sister's shoulder.

“I-I know you we-were very close, b-but-” Celestia tried to continue whilst fighting back tears.

“He was my brothe-”

“Adopted brother Luna”

“I DON'T CARE!” Luna shouted in her sisters face, pure rage etched onto her face as if it were an 1000 year old carving.

“He was like a real brother to me” Luna whimpered quietly, “BUT YOU PICKED THOSE RIDICULOUS BULLIES OVER HIM AND, and,” She repeated more quietly, “look where that got us. Look where that got HIM. “ Luna yelled while jabbing a hoof in the direction of the now petrified Discord.

“Luna,” Celestia said sternly, “I-it did hurt to take the bullies side-” quickly raising a hoof to stop Luna's burst of outrage,

“but I-we had to. We are princesses Luna, this much is true, however, that means-”

“TO TATARUS WITH WHAT THAT MEANS... All I can see is my brother is a statue, A STATUE, all because I-I wa-wasn't a go-good enough sister to see that through all the jokes a-and smiles he-he was hurting.” Luna started to quietly sob again letting out a waterfall of glistening tears. Celestia raised a hoof to comfort her, but as soon as her hoof came in contact with the moon princesses shoulder Luna turn and glared at her, if looks could kill Celestia would've been dead in seconds. When Luna glanced at her 'sister' she could no longer see the mare who had cared for her as she grew up, instead she saw a monster.

“Y-you said that D-Dis-Discord wa-was a monster.”

“Y-yes,” Celestia choked as if not wanting to believe that she had.

“W-we-well you-YOUR THE MONSTER!” Those words cut Celestia's heart like butter as she stared blankly ahead in shock watching her beloved sister shoot away from her as fast as her wings could carry her, Luna was using her magic to tow the stone Discord with her. Celestia could see the, once again, steady flow of of tears that trailed behind her. Celestia was heart was broken like a mirror and the pieces of shattered glass were starting to hurt as they pierced her from the inside, breaking her even further. The only thing she could manage to whisper as Luna faded to a blue dot in the distance was,

“I'm sorry... brother”

Discord's POV

Though he would never admit it to anyone Discord felt very touched at what Lu-Lu had said to Sun-butt. It was her own sister and yet she still chose him, her.. her brother. Being locked in a stone prison was most certainly not the most enjoyable of prisons, mainly because there was no one there he could annoy. But the worst part and arguably the best part was still being able to see and hear, good because he heard what Lu-Lu said for him and he could at least see where he was going, bad because it is painful for a spirit of chaos to be aware of what was going on around him and not be able to participate.

“WHY?!” Discord screamed out loud (of course no one heard him though).

“I-I thought we were siblings to the end,” He stammered, “But she was lying!” He growled, “It seems the only ponies I can trust are Lu-Lu, and Cadence” He smiled remembering Luna as a filly, she had the most adorable smile and a very contagious laugh, Cadence was a prankster like him and he grinned even wider remembering the time they had made it rain pies on Sun-butt. He would get his revenge, but he would find away to leave Lu-Lu and Cadence out of it to keep his only sisters safe.

*Back at the castle* (no longer Discord's POV)

"How am I going to tell Cadence?" Luna said abruptly. She had forgotten all about the little alicorn that she and Celestia had adopted as a niece, she loved Discord to pieces (the feeling was mutual). Everyday the two would go round pranking the castle staff, the princesses, even the King and Queen themselves, before they left to join the moon and the sun. Cadence was 170 now (young for an alicorn, about 5-8 in normal pony years) and while she may be young she was very clever, it wouldn't take her long to realise what had happened. The memories of them pranking her nearly every day, hearing their giggles from somewhere, most likely from around a corner, watching her reaction to their prank brought pain now, knowing that it will never happen again. Poor Cadence, I hope she doesn't take it too harshly Luna thought to herself as she landed in the castle gardens. The moon princess was NOT leaving Discords statue in the garden to show off the fact that they had stopped the Lord of Chaos, but as a memorial to him out of respect and her love for him. Where to put his statue however was much harder. She had first thought of placing him near the statue of strength, then the statue of hope, but finally she settled for the statue of family.

"Cadence" Luna called, having returned to the castle.

"Yes Aunt Luna, did you convince Discord to come back; I have a really cool idea for a prank," Cadence bounced out of her room. Luna and Celestia had told Cadence that Discord had gone away and that a strange being was causing the chaos. They had also told her that Discord could stop this creature but they needed to go and find him first. If Discord had listened and changed Equestria back then he could lie to her as well, she wouldn't need to know, but Discord was a statue now and Cadence needed to know.

"Discord i-isn't coming ba-back," Luna choked.

"But everything i-is back to normal," Cadence said, looking confused as tears formed in the alicorn of love's eyes.

"H-he stopped the chaos y-yes bu-but he can't co-come back. W-we carved a-a sta-statue in his honour, it i-is in the gar-garden," tears began their steady fall down Cadence's cheeks as she ran out and into the garden. Luna retreated to her room and promptly fell asleep due to the exhaustion of the day.

*In Luna's dream*

"L-L-Lu-Luna," a familiar voice rang through her head.

"Di-Discord!" Luna cried back as she made out the mismatched shape of the draconequus, she ran and hugged him before stepping back and hanging her head realising that this was a dream, this Discord was a dream. Discord only chuckled in response reading her mind.

"I'm real. Only just though, it is taking all my strength to be here. I've already seen Cadence though." Discord said nonchalantly.

"But how? I'm the only one who can perform the dream spell," Luna inquired.

"Weeeeeeell I might have listened in while you took your lessons. I was interested in dream magic; wasn't very good at it though," he laughed.

"I love you bro," Luna said through tears, wanting to tell him one more time.

"I love you too sis," with that he vanished. Luna could've sworn she heard a faint whisper on the wind saying Don't cry, I'll be back. Then the scene in front of her changed. Luna gasped, this was where she first met her brother.

The Start of a Family

It should have been beautiful; it probably was, before all this. Things like this rarely happened in Equestria, raging fires popping up from nowhere. Luna was glad she was still small enough to hide underneath her Mother's protective wing. This village scared her. All the death and destruction; no reason, no survivors. That was when she heard it. The noise, the groaning, the pitiful moans. Slowly Luna floated ( walking was for people with no imagination) over to the source and immediately recoiled. It was not that he ( it ?) was ugly, it was just not what Luna had expected. The creature was coiled in a small ball, its misshaped limbs curled around itself in a pitiful effort to keep warm. It wasn't working and she saw shivers racing over it. This creature was obviously not a pony and Luna should be telling her parents, but something about this creature intrigued her. Was this animal the cause of the fire? Luna was sure that was not the case. So what was it doing here all alone and, more importantly, why was it not harmed by the devastating fire?

She felt a hoof on her shoulder and would have shrieked if a gag hadn't magically appeared around her mouth. She turned and relaxed as she saw the familiar face of her sister, and then tensed as she saw the familiar expression on the familiar face.
"Look I haven't done anything" she whispered, not wanting to wake the creature.
"Not yet you haven't anyway and WHAT is that?" Luna shrugged in reply; then gasped as the thing started uncoiling its limbs.
"It's awake" Celestia whispered in terror.

The creature looked up at the princesses with true fear shining as bright as the night stars in it's eyes. It screamed. It ran as fast as it's near frozen limbs would allow; due to exhaustion, it collapsed. Where most ponies would see one less threat to deal with, Luna saw an afraid creature who was lost and alone, a creature who needed care and medical attention, but, most importantly, a creature who needed a friend. It was clear as day to her that this thing needed help and fast, so she tried lifting it with her magic, which, unfortunately, was not strong enough to lift the chimera any more than a centimetre into the air.

"What are you doing!" Celestia cried after realising what Luna was trying to do.
"Something you didn't have the heart to do, " Luna replied, stung.
"But he's, it's … different from you and me Luna."
"So, everypony deserves a little love don't they. Please don't tell me you've gone all changeling and lost your heart," Luna retorted angrily.
She saw shock register on Celestia's face and immediately realised she had gone too far.
"No, Tia, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
"Luna calm down, you're right he deserves, and needs, our care," Celestia told her as she took over and used her magic and lifted him out of the wreckage.

"Girls!" Staria called out desperately, looking for Luna and Celestia, both of whom had vanished.

"Mother! We're over here," Luna cried in return, realising she had forgotten to tell her mother where she had gone whoops.

"Girls, what have I told you about sneaking off like that, it's dangerous around here," Celestia and Luna hung their heads, "do you understand the dangers of this place, there are fires appearing randomly, strange monsters living here and- what is THAT!" Staria exlaimed pointing her golden hoof at the creature behind the sisters, finally noticing it. Celestia explained to her mother that this creature was very cold and tired, but strangely not hurt; in short it needed help and they were there, how could they leave another creature to die. Staria nodded in agreement and, while still wary, used her magic to summon three blankets from the palace for her daughters and for the creature. While she did this, Luna used magic to begin a small fire and together the four sat. A family to be, amidst all the destruction.

Back at the castle (after Staria and Stellarum (Luna and Celestia's father) had stopped the fires and cleaned up most of the mess) Luna and Celestia were sitting beside the chimera as it slept in one of the many guest beds, whispering to one another about what the creature is and where it came from. Staria and Stellarum entered the room.

"Let me cast a deep sleeping spell on it so it can get the proper rest it needs," Staria said whilst gently moving the sisters out of the way.

"You sure you don't want me to do it?" Stellarum asked.

"Really, you know that while you can enter dreams I was always better than you at sleeping spells," Staria teased.

"It's true," Sellarum said casually, "I guess" He muttered quietly, Celestia and Luna giggled at his remark. Staria started on her sleeping spell and the others left, knowing she would need her full concentration, hoping to get their questions answered in the morning.

Early the next morning Staria, Luna and Celestia congregated outside the room the creature stayed in. Then taking a deep breath they all rushed in and the creature just stared at them.

Finally Staria broke the silence.

"So, would you care to tell us your name and what creature you are," she said softly.

"I'm Discord and I'm a draconequus," he said proudly.

"Where do you come from Discord," Luna butt in.

"Weeeeeeeeell it is quite a lot of long stor-"

"How long?" Luna interrupted. Discord shot her a glare.

"Long" he replied curtly. He was about to begin again when there was a squeal.

"Hey put me down!" Discord looked up and saw Luna levitating in the sky surrounded by a bubble of Celestia's magic.

"You should continue while you still have the chance" Staria encouraged. So Discord heaved a huge breath and began … again.

"It was not always this way, I am not the only draconequus there were more."

"More" Luna repeated in awe, everyone turned and glared at her.

"Yes we lived in peace with the ponies. They would not kill us and we would give them amazing gifts like jewels and chocolate milk,"

"Chocolate milk" Luna gasped and then gasped again as she was lifted up and far away from the others.

"Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy," Luna's voice echoed as she landed in a mushroom of dust at least one kilometre away. Discord sighed at least she was far, far away.

"However a sickness spread through my species until my parents were the only breeding couple left in the whole of Equestria. They had bred but unfortunately I was the only draconequus left so there was no one to carry on the species so we were, to be dramatic, DOOMED. Then the next catastrophe arrived."

"The next catastrophe arrived?" questioned Luna.

"Yes, wait when did you arrive?"

"Only recently " Luna replied with a smug smile.

"Carry on," Celestia and Staria sighed.

"Fine, fine. It was a blizzard. A massive blizzard apparently sent by the Windigos."

"Oh I know this," Celestia cried.

"Of course you do," her younger sister muttered. Celestia continued uninterrupted,

"The Windigos fed off the hatred between the tribes and used it to create a blizzard only for the blizzard to create more hatred, eventually the tribe leaders decided to look for a new land, they all found the same one and the blizzard started again. The leaders bodies froze over but their assistants became friends and their friendship chased away the Windigos. The leaders thawed and in the end they became friends and Equestria was born."

"Yes, exactly and the blizzard targeted my village and froze half the villagers,"

"Half of the villagers!" Luna repeated shocked.

"Must you repeat EVERYTHING I say, if you don't stop I will have to do something like teleport you to the Everfree forest," Discord yelled at the terrified midnight alicorn.

"Th-the Ev-v-verf-f-free forest" Luna stuttered. We live in the Everfree Forest and she's still scared of it Celestia rolled her eyes silently at her younger sister.

"Right that is the last straw", and using his chaotic magic he turned Luna's mouth into a zip. Slowly she unzipped the zipped up zip and crept stealthily up behind Discord.

"THE LAST STRAW?" She bellowed into Discord's ear. Staria nodded to Discord to keep going while Celestia tugged Luna off Discord and wrestled her to the ground. At this Discord suddenly turned serious.

"You know magic takes control when you are feeling most emotional. Well my magic took control of me and my terror, rage, upset began to burn inside of me and then burn outside of me. The fire spread like well, a wildfire and by the time I got control of my emotions it was too late. The village, the villagers, everything had been burnt down all because of me." Discord hung his head. Slowly Staria approached him putting her hoof around his neck. Even the small act of kindness broke Discord and he sat down crying thinking of his dead mother.

"Would she still have loved me even though I have done this?" He didn't realise he had been speaking out loud until a voice comforted him.

"Discord your mother would always have loved you even if you turned out to be a murderous psychopath because that is what mothers do they love their children no matter what." Discord turned around to meet Staria's unwavering, amethyst gaze and something inside him told him she was right.

"Anyway" she continued "you still have a family … us!" Discord knew (again) she was right. The three of them stood up to look for Stellarum (they had something they wanted to discuss) to give Discord some more rest .

The Plan

"Are you sure?" Stellarum inquired.

"Yes, it will be good for the girls and he has no family, so of course I'm sure," Staria replied with certainty.

"Ok, but nothing permanent yet, we still hardly know him and his magic is rather wild," Stellarum said, still a little uncertain.

"Another reason that my idea should be implemented, we can help him learn to control his magic," Staria insisted.

"Fine, fine he can-," the doors suddenly burst open and Luna and Celestia charged in.

"Come on, you've been in here for ages, and we want to spend some more time with Discord," Luna whined. Staria giggled softly at her youngest daughter's behaviour before telling them her plan. After explaining the plan to the girls the King and Queen were met with gasps, laughs and shouts of joy. Stellarum ushered the sisters out of the room, telling them to go break the news to Discord.

Celestia and Luna charged down the hallways, even getting lost a few times, despite living in the castle themselves. The guards smiled fondly as they passed, shouting at each other, blaming the other for why they were lost. Eventually, the two fillies found themselves outside Discord's room and they burst in, making the draconequus leap up in surprise. Luna jumped forwards, talking too fast for anypony to understand her, Celestia just stood there, one hoof over her shaking head.

"Hold on, Luna. I can't understand a word you're saying!" Discord laughed. Luna pouted as she was lifted away by her elder sister; Celestia and Discord just continued to chuckle at the midnight filly.

"What my sister was trying to say, well, it's good news for one," Celestia said, trying to put off the big news as long as she could.

"And? What is the good news? Is it good news for me or good news for you? Or is it good news for both of us? Or are you going to tell me that the war between the fish and the forks is over? 'Cause I've been waiting for 20 years to know the outcome of that!" Discord asked impatiently, not wanting to have to wait any longer too hear this 'good news'.

"Well, firstly, I wanted to ask you a question- Wait, the war between the fish and the...forks? What in Equestria is that?" Celestia tilted her head in confusion; Luna looked and Discord, complete understanding in her gaze.

"It isn't in Equestria. But, if you really want to know I guess I'll have to tell you. The Fish and the Fork are at war. Now tell me the news!" Discord whined impatiently.

Celestia sighed good-naturedly, "Well, I do want to ask you a question quickly . How old are you? I'd like to know because I think I might be the oldest here, judging by your childish nature" She added to herself, "But I'd like to be sure."

"I'm 173," Discord said smugly.

"I'm 93!" Luna called from the corner she was standing in; the filly was making shapes out of the shadows (in her mind that is).

"I'm258," Celestia said quickly, "Luna! Are you trying to find shapes in the shadows again?" Celestia said, trying to change the subject.

"But, it's fun Tia! There are so many!" Luna said enthusiastically; Celestia smacked her face with her hoof and Discord chuckled slightly, raising his claw, he snapped it. Suddenly, the shadows sprang into life around the filly and the danced along the walls, creating all kinds of creatures before swirling into another. Luna's eyes lit up at the display and she raced around the room, following the shadows. Discord smiled widely at the filly, glad that she was enjoying his magic. Celestia smiled gently at her sister, but was frowning in her mind. No creature should have such magical ability at such a young age. Well, I guess it's okay, as long as he doesn't use it to hurt others, at least he'll be taught by good ponies. Wait, he doesn't know yet! I forgot to tell him! Celestia realised suddenly.

"Discord? Could you put those shadows back? I never told you the news!" Celestia said, nudging Discord slightly.

"Tia! How could you forget!" Luna called out, facing away from the wall when the shadows can to rest in their natural places.

"Well maybe because you were messing around with the shadows!" Celestia retorted.

"You were the one who brought it up!" Discord coughed quietly, it got the sisters attention and they both blushed slightly in embarrassment.

"Sorry Discord, anyway, the news." Discord started to rock back and forth on his bed in excitement.

"We're going to adopt you!" Luna interrupted.

"Luna! I wanted to tell him!" Celestia whined, completely ignoring Discord's shocked expression.

"Sorry Tia" Luna said sheepishly. Celestia groaned in frustration and Discord just sat there, speechless.

"Y-You want to-to a-adopt, me?" Discord stuttered, shock still plastered on his face like the kind of face paint that never comes off.

"Yeah!" Luna and Celestia said in unison, the giggled quietly at themselves. Discord didn't know what to say, so he sat there silently, his chaotic mind trying to figure the situation out. His mind couldn't form an image. Instead the deceptive image of the village sprung to mind; the image of said village burning was impatient to follow. No. To Discord there was no way he would ever be accepted; different is bad and it always will be. A fire of fear grew in his chest until it was so formidable that it could bring Eden to it's knees and burn it to the ground. The flames only added red like that of a dripping sunset to the images of cages, chains and pure, unadulterated fear that grew in his mind like a brooding storm and he just wanted to run and never face the world or the fear again. He felt as though the crisp white walls of his room were clawing at his skin, pulling him, dragging him, further and further into the red hot flames of fear that melted his already torn skin and engulfed his resolves and ideals and sheer will to live. Something inside him told him to run, because will never be accepted, he will never be loved because he is a monster!

"Discord!" Luna's shaky voice ripped through his thoughts like the claws that had emerged from the walls, the loud tone indicating that she hadn't just started to call his name. Her appropriately coloured midnight eyes, already filling with the stars that filled her soon-to-be night sky, closer to his red irises that her remembered them being before, "Are- Are you okay?" Luna's voice portrayed no sign of anything but worry and concern. Unphased by her question, Discord glared into her cobalt eyes, looking for something, anything, that could act as a bucket of water to extinguish the fire of doubt and fear, but, there was the chance that what he found would only act as kindling for the raging heat that radiated off him in waves He only saw concern, concern that had rooted itself so deeply into the filly's mind that he wanted to send the voice of doubt to the moon where it would be forgotten forever. The flames died down, ever present, but only enjoying their pastime of flitting around the edges of his mind. Discord tore his gaze away, satisfied by what he saw.

"I-I'm f-fine, I just- can I- would you- am I- don't you see me as a m-monster?" The word could only just squeeze past his lips, and he still flinched at the word. But it's true, I am a monster

"What? No! You may look different, but that only makes you all the more unique and amazing. Your differences only make you who you are, it's the same with your magic. It doesn't matter to me, or anyone else what you look like. I can see that in your heart you are someone so special and incredible that you can't be ordinary, it just isn't you; I like you the way you are, as does Luna, my mother and my father. If the rest of Equestria can't see that it's because they're too narrow-minded to accept differences and if I have to visit every single pony in the land to personally force their eyes open, then so be it. I will not let you live out your life thinking that you are something you're not, I promise." Discord sat in shock, slowly uncurling himself from the corner he didn't even realise he was in.

"Th-thank you," came Discord's weak reply. Celestia let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding and smiled softly at the draconequus in front of her. Luna stood next to her, eye level with Discord, he could see the truth in their, the warmth they radiated was nothing like the flames that eagerly ate away at Discord mere minuets before-hoof.

Eventually, with the help of Celestia's speech, Discord's head wrapped itself around the concept that sompony wanted to have him around and tears of joy began to spill down his face. The fillies pulled him into a hug and, after a while, he hugged them back. Discord pulled away, his tears had stopped flowing and the faucet in his eyes had turned off. Then happiness overwhelmed his mind.

"Enough of this sappy stuff, I want to party!" Discord snapped his talons and, suddenly, the room was filled with music and lights, "Well? Don't just stand there. I know I'm pretty amazing, but you can stare at me in awe some other time," Discord smirked, his usual facade to mask the relief and residue of pain in place. The two sisters shook there heads, smiles present on their faces, and looked around at the newly decorated room, "Come on, sisters, it is a party you know"

"Fine then, brother, I bet I could beat you in a dance off!" Luna shouted at the draconequus, "Tia! You be the judge! Okay?" Celestia just nodded, laughing at her sister's antics.

"You are so on!" Came Discords reply, his eyes nearly overflowing with laughter.

In the end, Discord won the dance off, if only because of his more flexible body. Staria and Stellarum finished all the paperwork, but Celestia, Luna and Discord already felt like siblings. Yes, Discord thought, I think I will enjoy it here.
