First, before I start, do NOT go thundering off like some herd of buffalo and try to stampede the author I'm about to reference. This post is for educational purposes only. Put away your swords and get out your pencils. More after the break.
Mr. Hemmelgarn has been showing up again. He's my old high-school English teacher. And late at night, or when I am really tired, he appears just out of sight. Just behind the corner of my eye. I can hear him breathing and wheezing, so I know its him. He huffs and puffs like a slowly-deflating air mattress, and he stares at me. He stares and whispers four ugly words:
"Write what you Know."
Shut it, Mr. Hemmelgarn. That's bad advice.
I meant to post this last night (early this morning), but apparently I was somewhat incoherent so I forgot to hit the 'post' button. Woops. BUT NOW HERE IT IS.
"Oh Tumbleweed!" you cry. "Tell us how to Write Starlight Glimmer even though you've only used her in like one story but that doesn't matter because you're the best at pony stories so any bits of wisdom you can pass along will be super useful!"
Well hello, internet!
I suppose this is my impromptu writing blog, because ... well, I dunno where else I'd put it. My friends on Facebook would probably just skim over it, and I figure I've got a built in 'fanbase' here. For, all, like, seven of you reading this. But still!
Remember this blog post I made awhile back? Yeah, I decided to do it. Going slow but steady so far.
Welp, School's starting for me today. And you know what that means! Writing!!!
I hate my story.... but I also love it.
I want to finish it but I can't.
Nothing feels right.
I've waited too long to finish it, but I will.
This is punishment for my negligence
I'll go first: I have no clue how to characterize any of the characters beyond their broadest strokes. Except Pinkie Pie because I'm basically her. Anytime I want to write a serious story, I feel paralyzed by that.
Also, I just suck at doing pretty much anything that doesn't involve immediate dopamine release--I'm very good at browsing Facebook or masturbating for hours, but sitting down and hammering out some serious words that aren't going to be easy to write? I suck so fucking hard at.
An unknown pony is saying their name. Would it be used in the same paragraph on the "___ said" part, or would the name only be used the next time she speaks?
Like, would it go:
"My name is blank", said blank
Or would it go:
"My name is blank" said the stranger
Crossover stories with Yu-Gi-Oh! pop up on this site from time to time, and while the quality of said stories varies, they all share the same issue in my eyes: they do not treat duels as part of the story proper.
"The hay does that even mean?"
Easy. I believe duels should be subject to the same rules of storytelling than the rest of the story. First and foremost, indicating the players’ life points like this,
TWILIGHT: 4000 LP
SPIKE: 2500 LP
I've just been reminded of something awesome!
National Novel Writing Month!
For those of you who aren't in the know, it comes about every November, and you write yourself a novel! Your aim is at least two thousand words a day, and by the end of the month, you have a story! Might not be great, but it's great exercise, and the best thing is even if you're not happy with what you've produced, you leave it alone for a couple of weeks and you have plenty of material to come back to later!
As I sit here looking west, the horizon glows with the warmth of the slowly sinking sun while beneath her, little sparkles flitter in her evening rays. These sparkles are travelers, the lines they make as they dart across the darkening land marking the highways that connect between the great cities of the heartland and the roads that lead into the rolling farmlands and rustic homesteads of the countryside. Everyday, ponies cross over these roads; in the morning, their hoof steps clop in a
This includes What If, which normally updates even during my hiatuses.
I just don't feel like I can deliver the same writing quality to y'all when I haven't been able to put much attention into writing in the first place.
So, no updates on anything until at least May 5th. Maybe even later.
I have many story ideas, but currently am focusing on two at the moment. Unfortunately, progress is hindered by a couple of factors.
Number One: Outlining. In School, I learned about outlining the major events of the story for ease of reference. Because of this, whenever I write multi-chapter stories, I have to first write an outline of the story, which can take a VERY long time, especially when looking for filler material. As such, I haven't even started writing the actual stories yet.
Not just writing fanfics, but writing in general. Right now I write news articles for a living, specifically news about technology and games, with a little entertainment news thrown in once in awhile. And I even write fanfics every now and then. It isn't an easy job. I write seven articles daily, and have to submit them on time. I have come to appreciate news writers who have done this for years on end, as well as writers out there who do this for a living. It's not easy trying to get a story
Ray Bradbury was a giant among science fiction writers, most remembered for his Mars stories. From Bradbury Landing where the Curiosity rover explored, to the many movies and TV shows that follow his writing, he left his footprints across many worlds. June 5 will be the 9th anniversary of his death, and I thought I’d write a small tribute to his influence on my pony hobby. Above the break is a bit from the 1979 miniseries, and below,
Hooray!
chapter 2 is up and ready to read!
As always, any and all constructive feedback and critique is welcome :)
