Wow. There is something so striking about the style of this work. It's downright poetic!

Did... Did she fail her trial? Why? Was the objective specifically to send your opponent off the edge and fall down? And because she obliterated them instead she is the one who will fall.

Assuming you both were confused by the story's ending: the purpose is to kill your opponent and toss their body to the ground far below their city. She failed because she broke down crying afterward, even though she didn't realize she was crying at first. It ends with her knowing that she will be thrown off the city instead, with her wings bound.

OMG how did I miss that!

I feel so silly now. I got so lost in the prose I didn't pick up on it. Also it didn't really sink in that she's 8 years old until now.

OMG they killed her whole family too!! AHHHHGG.
