Sisters Forever: Chapter 1: The Beginning of Their Story

Story Summary: The prequel to "Temporary Home". Scootaloo and Emerald have not always lived on the streets. This is the story of how they ended up living in that abandoned warehouse.

Chapter Summary: After their mom dies, the twins are split up and brought to live with their grandparents.

It was a dark night, as most stories do begin. Our story begins in the Ponyville Hospital. Two elder ponies were pacing the waiting room as their two four-year-old grand-fillies slept curled up on a chair. Suddenly the doors the operation room opened revealing a white nurse pony who approached them steadily, a frown she wore her face

"I'm sorry, we did everything we could. She was just too sick." the white nurse pony said to a unicorn mare and a pegasus stallion. She had a pink mane which she wore in a bun and a white nurse's uniform with a nametag bareing her name, Red Heart.

The unicorn was once a very bright ruby red but the years had made her coat a rather dull shade of red. Her light blond mane was short and curly. Her visitor name tag read "Ruby Shimmer". The pegasus too had a much more lustrous coat in his younger years. His coat now was a dull orange. His mane was grey and messy. According to his name tag, his name was Peddles Zoom. They had been waiting for the results of a surgery to save Sunstone Shine's life. She was Ruby's daughter and Peddles' daughter-in-law.

"What about her fillies? Where will they go?" Ruby asked concernedly. They knew that there would be time to mourn later. They had to be strong for their grandfillies. Their dad had died when the twins were one so they were all their grand-fillies had left.

"Well, I looked into the family records and it seems that you are the only two relatives that are qualified to watch over them." the nurse said sympathetically.

"I guess that means one of us shall have to do it," Peddles' said calmly, "but how do we choose? I mean if Emy and Scoot both come to live with me then Scoot could learn flying but how will Emy learn magic? And if they live with you how will Scoot learn to fly? Sunny lived in Ponyville so I was going to teach Scoot how to fly for her."

"I guess I could move to Ponyville, but my job demands me to stay in Canterlot. You could move, but you have to clear the skies of Ponyville." Ruby contemplated. She had only come to Ponyville for her daughter and grandfillies.

After what seemed like hours, Ruby and Peddles came to a decision. They finally turned the two sleeping fillies. One was a emerald green unicorn with a dirty blond mane. The other, a orange pegasus with a dark pink mane, was curled up next to her. After giving the two fillies a gentle nudge to wake them up, the two elders broke the news of their mom's passing and who they were going with.

"Girls, your mom she's-she's up there with your dad." Ruby said, finding it hard to hide the tears as they stung her eyes, "She isn't coming back."

"Why? Did we do something wrong?" Scoot, the orange pegasus, immediately started crying while Emy, the emerald green unicorn, cried silently.

"No, you see, she-she was very sick." Peddles said, also having trouble containing the tears that were forming in his eyes, "and me and your grandma were talking. I can't teach Emy how to use her magic and Ruby can't teach Scoot how to fly. Since we want Emy to learn magic and Scoot to fly we decided that Scoot you're coming home with me."

"And Emy, you're coming back to Canterlot with me. We're spending the weekend here and coming back in a few weeks for the funeral." Ruby added, trying to regain her strength.

"But-but, I don't wanna leave Scoot!" Emy cried desperately grabbing on to her sister for dear life.

"And I don't want Emy to go!" Scoot seconded, also clinging to her sister.

"Don't worry. We'll visit each other every other weekend." Ruby soothed.

This didn't help much but the two sisters realized they weren't going to win this battle, as much as hurt them to be separated from each other. They began to shed silent tears in each others' embrace.

"Don't cry girls! You still have the rest of the weekend together and we're coming up in two weeks!" Peddles exclaimed.

Ruby then proceeded to pick up the two crying fillies with her magic. The four then left the hospital's waiting room and headed off to Peddles home.

THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER

"Scootaloo, could you please tell me why again you are going to Canterlot?" Sweetie Belle asked her pegasus friend as she waited with Scoot at the train station. They had just formed the Cutie Mark Crusaders with Apple Bloom a little less than a week ago.

"I'm going to go visit my sister. She lives in Canterlot with our Grandma. We stay at each other's houses every other weekend. This weekend it's my turn to visit her in Canterlot." the orange pegasus replied as she adjusted her saddle bags.

"Wait, I didn't know you had a sister. What's her name? What's she like?" Sweetie Belle then asked.

"Her name is Emerald Glow but everypony calls her Emy. She's my twin unicorn sister and she is really fun and super nice!" Scootaloo exclaimed.

"Why doesn't she live here in Ponyville with you and your granddad?" Sweetie Belle

"I don't know." the pegasus replied after thinking it over for a minute., "I'll ask her if she knows."

Just then the train blew it's loud whistle signaling that it was pulling up.

"Oh, gotta go! Bye Sweetie, see ya at school on Monday!" the pegasus cried out as she rushed over to the platform, her train ticket in her mouth, her saddle bags and scooter on her back.

Chapter Summary: The Cutie Mark Crusaders meet Emy.

TWO WEEKS LATER

"Come on girls! Emy's train will be here any minute!" Scoot called back to her friends who, unlike her, had not reached the platform.

"How in all of Equestria are we supposed ta keep up with ya when yer on that scooter of yers?!?" asked/exclaimed Apple Bloom between pants once she had caught up, Sweetie Belle only a few meters behind her.

"Yeah!" seconded Sweetie Belle in between pants of her own.

"Oops," Scootaloo started with a nervous laugh, "I forgot I was riding again."

This caused both of her friends to face hoof simultaneously. This had happened at least three times before.

Just then a sharp whistle blew, alerting the fillies that the train was approaching the platform. It screeched to a stop and after a moment passengers filed out. Among them was a emerald green unicorn filly with a wavy dirty blond mane. No mark lay on her flank and her eyes glistened of the same purple color as her sister, though a pair of dark green glasses covered them. She was noticeably smaller and thinner than most fillies their age. She tripped on the last step down and tumbled down on to the hard cement.

"Emy!" the orange pegasus of the trio called out as she ran towards her twin to help her back to up to her hooves. This happened nearly every time Emy came for the weekend but it worried Scoot all the same.

"I'm fine, Scoot. I just bonked my head again." the emerald unicorn said as though this was normal while her sister helped her back up.

"I know, Emy, but you're still my sister so I have every right to worry about you." Scoot replied, "Any ways, it's time for you to meet my friends, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle. Hey girls, come over here!"

The two fillies trotted over to where Scootaloo and her sister were standing.

"Girls, this is my twin sister, Emerald Glow." Scootaloo introduced her sister.

"Nice to meet you." greeted the green filly.

"Emerald, these are my friends, Apple Bloom-" Scootaloo started to introduce only to be interrupted by the yellow earth filly she was introducing.

"Howdy!" Apple Bloom greeted.

"-and Sweetie Belle." Scootaloo continued, completely unfazed by getting interrupted.

"Hi!" the unicorn exclaimed using her common greeting.

"Umm... Emerald-"Apple Bloom started to say only to be cut off.

"Oh, you can call me Emy!" the unicorn stating the name she went by.

"Uh... Emy, that was quite a knocker ya took to yer head. Shouldn't ya go see Nurse Red Heart?" Apple Bloom asked, slightly worried about her friend's sister's wellfare.

"Well, considering that this happens each time I visit, I'd say it's really not worth it, but I'll go if it makes you feel better." Emy said calmly.

"How 'bout we go and get you checked into the hospital again!" Scootaloo joked at the fact that Emy would always be escorted by Granddad to the hospital when she arrived home after finding out that she tripped or tumbled down. They always would come out saying she was as fine as ever the morning.

The two other fillies were unaware of this though and started to panic.

"You've been admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions!" rambled a panicked Sweetie Belle.

"Umm... Should Ah call 9-1-1?" Apple Bloom asked nervously.

"No, of course not! You two are being such silly fillies!" Emy assured them with a giggle, "We just go tell Granddad where we're heading and we walk down to the hospital."

The girls were lucky as a doctor could see Emy right away.

While waiting for Emy to be finished the girls sat in the waiting room.

"Scoot, Ah'm worried bout Emy. Do ya think she's gonna be alright?" Apple Bloom asked of her friend.

"She's fine Apple Bloom!" Scootaloo said, her voice reeking of confidence of her statement.

Truth be told, Scootaloo was right. They soon all left the hospital. It was dark when they left.

"Whoa Emy, your coat is glowing!" shrieked a once again panicked Sweetie Belle once they were outside.

"Yeah, isn't it cool! That's where the "Glow" part of my name comes from, ya know!" Emy replied happily earning a face hoof from both Scootaloo and Apple Bloom.

"Hey Emmy, ya wanna be a honorary Cutie Mark Crusader?" Apple Bloom asked.

"You can go crusading with us when you visit!" Scoot added.

"I'd love to!" Emy accepted her new friend's offer.

Author's Note: Ok, so this chapter was mostly to fill in gaps of knowledge about Emy.

Sisters Forever: Chapter 3: Grandma's Final Goodnight

Story Summary: The prequel to "Temporary Home". Scootaloo and Emerald have not always lived on the streets. This is the story of how they ended up living in that abandoned warehouse.

Chapter Summary: Grandma dies when Scoot is visiting and Emy moves in with Peddles and Scoot.

ABOUT TWO YEARS LATER

"Ain't it Emy's turn ta visit ya?" Apple Bloom asked Scootaloo.

Scootaloo was once again waiting at the train platform with her fellow crusader red-maned.

"Normally, yes. But Grandma is sick so I'm visiting them." Scootaloo said calmly.

A shrill whistle suddenly muted all other noises.

"See ya on Monday, Scoot!" Apple Bloom called out to her friend as that said friend boarded the passenger car.

ONE HOUR LATER

When Scootaloo reached Canterlot she saw Emy. She face was wet with tears which continued to flow out of her eyes. Her tears were silent though. Scootaloo had not seen her wear this face since...

... Since their mom passed away. The pieces were now all coming together. She ran up to Emerald with the upmost concern.

"Emy, Emy is Grandma alright?" the orange pegasus urgently asked her sister.

She was answered with a shake of the head.

"She's really sick, Scoot. They don't think she'll last the night." Emy said mournfully.

"Can we go see her?" Scoot asked.

Emy just nodded in response. Emy and Scoot then climbed on to their scooters and sped off towards the hospital.

"Girls, don't cry. I know soon I'll be gone but that doesn't mean I truly left." Grandma told her sobbing grand fillies. She was met with confused expressions from both fillies.

Her coat was very pale with patches of it missing and only a few of her once glorious mane still lingered on her head. She was struggling with every breath she made but she tried her hardest not to show her pain. She wasn't fooling anypony, though.

"Here, these are for you." the dying mare said her frail hooves handed the two fillies each a necklace with a sunstone pendent in the shape of a heart, their deceased mom's namesake.

"When I'm gone a ruby pendant shall also be there along side the sunstone." the old mare told them in between coughs of blood, "My time is almost up, girls. Emy, you are moving in with your granddad. One more thing before I join your parents, I love both of you. Never forget that."

"Tell them we say hi." Emy said trying to suppress the tears that were building up in her eyes.

"Of course I will" the dying mare said trying to keep the up beet mood but failing miserably. These words were her last.

She then burst into a coughing fit, hacking out blood with every cough. This alerted a nurse who then came and asked the two fillies to sit in the waiting room for a few minutes. She was to escort them to the train station.

LATER THAT NIGHT

Scootaloo and Emerald Glow now sat in the passenger car. The ride back to Ponyville was deafeningly silent. Neither filly dared to make a sound nor move a muscle. It was as if their lives depended on it.

Suddenly the fillies were enveloped by a red aura. When it settled a ruby teardrop sat on the chains of both their necklaces.

The sight of the red teardrop made teardrops of their own fill their eyes. Grandma was gone.

Sorry this has taken so long! I've been having school work so its kind of hard to focus on writing. And yes, they both have scooters for transportation. It's the only way Emy can get around with out falling every five hoof steps. She is ok on the scooter. I mean, Scootaloo owns scootering and I'd never take that away from her!

Sisters Forever: Chapter 4: A New Day In A New Place

Story Summary: The prequel to "Temporary Home". Scootaloo and Emerald have not always lived on the streets. This is the story of how they ended up living in that abandoned warehouse.

Chapter Summary: Emy starts attending Ponyville Elementry Schoolhouse and becomes a full Cutie Mark Crusader.

THAT MONDAY MORNING

Apple Bloom and Sweetie were walking to school when they spotted Scootaloo and another filly that was to far away to recognize dragging their hooves as they headed off to the red school house. The two thirds of the Cutie Mark Crusaders trotted over to their friend.

"Hey Scoot! Hey... Emy?!?" Sweetie Belle started with a grin but quickly changed to a confused expression as she saw her best friend's twin, "What are you doing here, Emy? I thought that Scoot was visiting you and even if you were visiting the weekends over."

"She's-She's staying here... forever." Scoot replied as both she and her sister struggled to keep hold back the tears that were stinging their eyes.

She wasn't sad about her sister coming to live with her in Ponyville. If it were any under any other circumstances, she'd be thrilled to have her sister living with her and Granddad. It was the circumstances that made tears swell up inside of her and Emy's eyes.

"Why is she..." Apple Bloom started to asked, only to stop short realizing that her friends were on the edge of tears, "Oh. Ah'm sorry Ah asked."

"No, it's ok, Apple Bloom. You didn't know." Emy told her, not wanting the yellow filly to feel guilty for something she didn't know.

The four just walked silently the rest of the way to school in silence. Scoot and Emy because they were to sad to speak; Bloom and Sweetie because they knew that the twins would appreciate it. Miss Cheerilee was waiting for them when they arrived, as it was Emy's first day of school.

"Welcome girls," Miss Cheerilee greeted them before looking directly at Emy, "Welcome to Ponyville, Emerald. I'm sorry to here about your and Scoot's grandmother. I'm your teacher, Miss Cheerilee."

FIVE MINUTES LATER

Ring! Ring!

The school bell had now officialy began school. Miss Cheerilee and Emy made their way to the front of the class.

"Goodmorning class!" Miss Cheerilee greeted cheerfuly.

"Goodmorning Miss Cheerilee." the class responded half heartedly.

"We have a new student joining us today!" The mulberry teacher announced before giving Emy a little shove, "Go on, tell us a little about yourself."

"H-hi, I'm Emerald Glow but everypony calls me Emy. I'm living my granddad and twin sister, Scoot." Emy introduced, stumbling over her letters at first but eventually warmed up to it.

Everypony switched glances between her and Scootaloo. Apart from their eyes lavender eyes, they looked nothing alike.

"Ok Emy, why don't sit you take that empty seat behind your sister." Miss Cheerilee said before pointing out the desk she was refering to.

Emy slowly made her way to her desk and sat down. She looked around the classroom for a moment. It was a rather small room with three evenly spaced windows on the side walls. The one in front of them was without windows and instead had a chalkboard that covered most of it. A brown door stood between two windows on the wall across from it. Everypony was pulling out their homework besides her and two earth fillies. One was magenta with a purple and white mane. A tiara cutie mark adorned while the said tiara adorned her head. The other was silver with a pale silver mane and a silver spoon cutie mark. Instead of pulling out their homework they snickered and pointed to her bare flank. They mouthed the words "blank flank" and then joined the rest of the class in pulling out their assignments.

"Class bullies" Emy thought to herself. She knew she had a long day ahead of her.

Ring! Ring!

The school day was now over. Emy followed her sister and their two friends out of the school house.

"Hey Emy, we were kind of wondering if you would like to lose that honorary status and become a regular crusader." her sister asked her.

Scoot, as always, recovered from loss quicker than she did and she was rather good at forgeting painful memories for the most part. All she could truly remember at this point was Grandma was dead and the necklaces.

"Sure!" replied Emy.

The four then trotted off to the Cutie Mark Crusader clubhouse.

Confused about Emy? Let me explain, she has some very obvious quirks that you can easily see by just spending more than a minute with her such as being small and clumsy. One that would become obvious within an hour is a constant change in personality. Yeah, that's right! She has mood swings!

ONE WEEK, FIVE DAYS LATER

"SCOOT! COME QUICK!" Emy frantically called out to her still sleeping sister.

"I'm coming! I'm coming!" Scoot grumbled with a yawn as she walked into the room, "It's bucking four in the morning, Emy!"

It was their granddad's bedroom. But their granddad wasn't in the bed. It was still made as if he never went to bed the night before. He might of gotten up early and made his bed. But he wasn't anywhere in the house. They were sure of that. It was too early for him to leave the house so that wasn't it.

"Where's Granddad?" Scoot asked.

"That's the problem! I don't know!" Emy panicked.

"Emy, calm down. We don't want you to have a panic attack this early in the morning. Have you checked every room and called his cellphone?" the orange pegasus asked.

She was met with a nod.

"He's not here and when I tried to call his phone it said it was no longer available." Emy said, her voice still reaking of panic.

"Well let's just wait and if we don't get any kind of contact from him or see him by Monday morning we can worry." Scoot said calmly.

THE NEXT DAY

"Yes, I'll tell him you called." Scootaloo said before hanging up the phone.

It seemed that a storm was scheduled for earlier that day but their granddad failed to show up. After a bit of thought Scoot decided they had to start packing. If he didn't show up before they left for school they wouldn't return.

"Emy... I think we should start packing the essentials... just in case...," Scootaloo started before sighing in defeat at the reality, "he doesn't show come our departure for school."

"NO! He'll be back! I know it!" Emy defied her sister before starting to cry, knowing all too well that it was ery unlikely, "I go start packing."

She didn't want to have to think like that but she had no choice.

Come Monday morning he was still gone. The twins were ready but they lingered till the last possible minute. In their school bags were their school supplies plus a flashlight. A quilt and both of their capes were carried in Emy's bag while some food and bits lay in Scoot's. Both girls made a point to where their necklaces today. No new stone joined them, thankfully.

"I guess he's not coming back..." Emy spoke softly before a single teardrop formed in her eye.

"No time for tears. We can cry once we find a home." Scoot told her softly before they exited their home for the last time,"We'll be taken away if the grownups find out. We need to stay strong and leave home so they won't."

ONE MONTH LATER

"Have we tried pillow fighting yet?" Emerald asked the other crusaders.

I've got two ideas for sequels so be on the lookout. And yes, another one of Emy's quirks is that she is prone to panic attacks.
