I only ever saw the movie, since I didn't know there was a full anime until college. I'll have to give the anime a watch!
3547099 I like the anime a lot better than the movie because it goes into each of the character's back stories and elaborates on the reason behind the war. It is definitely worth the watch. My Hitomi that I cosplayed above is from the show. She is one of my favorite anime girls of all time. :)

3547132 I think that you will like it a lot.
The beginning is a little slow but once you get past the first few episodes it goes really fast. I think Escaflowne has some of the best character development that I've seen in a fantasy anime. And I've seen quite a few. It also has a very unique storyline. It is a must watch for any fantasy fan.

Not plot-wise but in the way you described it, it sounds very much like Princess Tutu. Also an excellent anime, if you haven't seen it!
3547139 Yep, that is a great one too. Escaflowne is very unique. It stands on its own in many ways.
