I recently discovered the EqG stories of NightCoreMoon. They have been fulfilling a need I didn’t realize I had for “angsty teen lesbian romantic dramedy” as NCM’s profile description describes them.
NCM’s stories are among the most “realistic” depictions of the EqG protagonists I’ve read. Perhaps the best thing I can say about these stories is that they will impact the way I look at the Mane 7 going forward. All of them will be more complex characters in any future EqG fanfic I read; and that is a gift from a writer to a reader.
NCM’s timeline is an essential guide in reading these EqG stories. It not only provides the order of the stories, but also where they fit in canon, and important dramatic context for what happens in the stories, both published and unpublished. While some stories are incomplete, the power of the storytelling and the character portrayals are such that the reader can often “fill in the gaps” and still get a lot of satisfaction from reading them.
Be advised that some of these stories are rated M and deserve their rating. And if you are looking for an escape from real-world problems, these stories may not be for you. Look closely at the tags before you read them.
NCM’s stories challenge me. I like all the EqG Mane 7 and normally have an easy empathy for them as characters. It is therefore sometimes hard for me to read parts of NCM’s stories when the angst level gets very high. The story’s “real world” consequences hit me all the harder because they often seem like repercussions that teens could actually have to deal with, just dialed up to 11. But I find NCM's strong character portrayals are worth the potential discomfort.
NightCoreMoon‘s last update was June 2020, but they still seem to log in regularly, so there could be more updates in the future.
