Ri2

I've spent almost twenty years of my life writing fanfiction. Something is clearly wrong with me, especially if I'm writing about pastel cartoon ponies now.

It's the trial of the decade. Nefarious serial killer Smiles Delight is guilty without a doubt, the case open and shut, and all that's left is the sentencing before he's no longer a blight on ponyki...wait, what? What do you mean they're letting him go?!

the pardoning power of the executive has no bearing on the judicial systems laws or sentences

Yeah, in OUR country.

8950776 Absolutely true so while Twilight could pardon him... the court could still sentence him and the stated intend to commit murder again would be grounds to detain him for public safety..

Genuine remorse doesn't always help either. Starlight's apologized lots of times and probably meant it, and yet she still kept screwing up, didn't she?

As for the emotional states, I'm not sure. Have we seen evidence of it, other than Sunset's special power? After all, I assumed for years memory erase spells were a thing, then we find out there was only a single artifact that could do it and it got tossed into another dimension.

True. I'm mostly basing that theory on the fact that mental manipulation spells (like Starlight's) exist, so presumably there are also those that let you perceive the mind. Obviously mind-reading spells would be difficult, but reading emotions would be much simpler. Then again, it's never a good idea to assume something exists, so maybe not.

Well, it's not like we've seen much of the Equestrian justice system in action. It...may not even exist?

Yes, Starlight keeps messing up, but at least she's trying. And honestly, she'd be a bigger danger if they did try to punish her. The only way Twilight was able to keep her from destroying the world was by talking her down and offering friendship. If they remove that chance of friendship again, what happens to Starlight? If she went into such a destructive spiral when Sunburst left, what would she do if Twilight is taken away too? And don't forget A Royal Problem, where she was so afraid that yet another impulsive spell backfired that she decided she was never, ever going to rely on her instinct again. If she gets punished for impulse decisions that backfire, she'll never be able to make an impulse decision when she actuallyneedsto.

Doesn't that also create the worry that she's one small step away from destroying the world again and everyone needs to walk on eggshells around her?

We don't see or hear much of the Equestrian legal system beyond some vague notions and mentions. The comics show ponies from all over Equestria airing their legal problems directly in the royal court with at least one royal presiding and handing down the verdict (such as a group of hippie ponies going to Luna on whether a bet they made, and lost, to the Flim Flam brothers had any legal ground).

I always just figured they took it to the nearest, highest and/or most relevant authority figure and give them unilateral say in the matter. If you don't like the answer or result, go higher. To the crowns themselves, if you must.

Didn’t she help kill that one villain from the crystal empire? I forgot his name, been awhile since I watched this show.

this should go in the Accusation Fic Collection group.

More like Cadance did.

I wondered if it counted as Accusation but wasn't sure.

Oh a Tyrantlesia story.

Ri2

This isn't a Tyrantlestia story.

8958385

An executive branch with the power to override legislative laws and impose judicial precedent through mere fiat?

Ri2

For one thing, Equestria's an absolute monarchy. For another, this is Twilight's fault, not Celestia's.

8960449

If it's an absolute monarchy its either a Tyrantlestia world where Celestia gives Twilight the same authority or the story is bullshit because an absolute monarchy doesn't mean Twilight has that authority.

Ri2

8960735
Do we even know what sort of authority Twilight has?

8960887

Does it matter in an absolute monarchy?

Keep in mind it was mostly the regular jerks and bullies like DT and SS, Babs, etc who got the forgiving treatment.

Real Big Bads like Nightmare Moon and Discord went through thousands of years in imprisonment first, Sombra got outright dusted, Storm King got crushed, and the last villain trio, including a filly, got stoned for eternity. I'd say SD would count in the latter catergory.

Flanderization of Twilight in this story aside, I was going to say about Twilight had no qualms about letting 3 villains get turned to stone indefinitely. But this story was made before that episode.
