weird, slightly triggery thought. Just cut myself with a kitchen knife (not badly) - thought it had stopped bleeding and looked down to see it hadn't. No pain or anything, but still felt teary? why? a learned response to blood? sadness at seeing it wasted? prolly just the former.

Headcanon 1: Pipp Wings That'd be my angle on it too. Their fluffiness is even a bit like Mumble in Happy Feet. He was dropped as an egg, maybe there was some issue with the pregnancy?
Headcanon 2: Different wing types Aw, I prefer the first headcanon.
Headcanon 3: Evolution/extinction I prefer a take that's a lil similar to the explanation for the different types of pony in FiM - sentient/semi-sentient animals come under the effects of harmony magic, just like the ponies themselves do. That magic creates horns and wings and plant manipulation. The fact that there's no cats suggests that their niche in the ecosystem doesn't work. Cats are carnivores and the G5 world is fairly hostile to that, maybe? Or maybe they're just less common and so the part of Equestria that we see doesn't have them, but there's a few cat places elsewhere? Or, more likely, the show was written by a dog lover who has a lil' dog called Albus (aw :3 ).
Headcanon 4: Hybrids I prefer the direct magical interference stance on this - Luna created 'em. Maybe when she passed on, they died out? What happened to Flutters' in Bats was a different, and highly unusual, magical accident. It was also hilarious. I lean towards all types of sentient creature being able to become hybrid. There's two forms of reproduction in Equestria, the messy kind we have, and another, more civilized, one — the magic of love. This latter can bypass physical limitations. So pony-dragons can be a thing, and also griffins (who are already a hybrid), as well as the physically possible ones like zonies, mules etc.
