Princess Celestia tasked her young student, Glissando, to venture into the world and soothe the hearts of her subjects before terror consumes them.

Now, five years later, Glissando has returned home as a grand maestro with his answer: a song to reshape the very foundations of the world and banish the darkness forever.

Octavia Melody has heard such sentiments shared on more than one occasion when shopping with her fruit-loving husband, Steeplechase. Be it the nocturne's heightened senses or just his general persnicketyness, grocery runs that used to take two hours at most have evolved into a living nightmare of picky produce perusals by the self-proclaimed foodie.

When a rare opportunity for the musical mare to go to the supermarket behind his back presents itself, Octavia plans to take full advantage by sneaking out for some hassle-free shopping. With the morning sun just below the horizon, "Operation: Early Bird Special" is a go.

Cloudsdale's Winter Rollout announcment for a white winter all season long puts everypony on the Ponyville weather team in a jovial mood. A wonderland with holiday cheer and snow-filled festivities all winter long will make the end of the year one to remember for sure, that is except for one rainy mare.

Sprinkle Medley, the newest and youngest pegasus of the weather team, feels buried alive in the news with depression overwhelming her like an avalanche. Skipping her daily duties, she retires to her living room with a roaring fire and a nice cup of cocoa to keep her company as she tries to ride out the flurry of emotions alone.

Octavia Melody's love of music has revolved around a single influential and prestigious work of art, the song May Our Sun Shine Forever. Since she was a filly, what has been the Equestrian national anthem for generations has continually inspired Octavia to perform, shaping her into the promising cellist she is today. Though the completed original was lost to the passage of time, the remnants of the final masterpiece composed by the Grand Maestro Glissando has been the cornerstone of not only Octavia's career, but modern music theory in Equestria.

When the tattered remains of an ancient songbook possibly containing the original song in its entirety is found, the Equestrian Society for the Performing Arts and Princess Luna begin planning a concert series to celebrate the work's eventual restoration. However, their meeting screeches to a halt once Princess Celestia vehemently forbids anypony from playing the original in the concert and demands its restoration to cease immediately. Octavia Melody finds herself at a loss, wondering why the princess of the sun would silence such a beautiful song meant to bring light to the world.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders always enjoy their special time with their favorite Ponyville princess as they learn so many cool and interesting things, even if Scootaloo isn't too fond of the whole "studying" part. After a mixing mishap causes an early close to Twilight Time, the little unicorn is left in the library without a teacher to help her practice until a certain sun-raiser pops in for a surprise visit to her former student.
