What I assume, based in part on the three photos of Sunset winning the Crown, is that the Sunset Shimmer who first came to the Humanoidverse was a much nicer person than the Sunset Shimmer we meet in the first Equestria Girls movie. Originally, she mostly manipulated others in what she considered was self-defense, considering that she had found herself in a society of (by Equestrian standards) cruel carnivorous ape-things.

Fanfiception

Whoa, okay, someone just did me the super cool kindness of writing something within the Empathy-verse! It's a story called Liminal Space about Timber and Flash's new relationship, after The Exes Club but before Empathy for the Devil.

Honestly not only do you get to see a time period that we skipped over in my writing, but it's a really well-written exploration of these characters. Plus it's more story in this universe while we're working on The Ex Files!!

So, as it turns out, Twilight Sparkle isn't quite the innocent mare she seems to be. Back in Canterlot, she did have a coltfriend and a marefriend! Flash Sentry and Moondancer. That said, it really was little more than an arrangement of "sexual release partners", friends with benefits at best. Twilight kind of forgot about them after she went to Ponyville, but Flash and Moondancer both had some issues after she left.
