This looks like a quite promising start. Why do I have a feeling that Twilight is going to have her expectations shattered much like her mirror once she gets to interact with Starswirl and the old crook turns out to be nothing like she expects (same probably going for his journal, heh).
Hey, this is very good! I especially like Starswirl's character and how his voice was developed. You have a very engaging prose style, I hope to hear more!
Also, have you ever read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Your writing seems like you might draw influence from that, or at least that certain "British Humuor" that is lacking here in the States. I like it!

Idk. Binding might be fine since he appears to simply be a manifestation. I take it Starswirl isn't quite the pony Twilight would have thought considering his reaction. It also seems a wee bit out of character for her to get all combative. I guess they're both in for a surprise.
I don't think 'simile' is the word you're looking for. Maybe 'metaphor' or something else implying that the figurative language is meant literally. Either that or just describe it without unnecessary comparisons.

At a guess, I'd say she is still jumpy after the whole Tirek ordeal and much more paranoid about having something happen to her new home as well (and thus more gung-ho about protecting it and its inhabitants at a moment's notice when it seemed like something weird was going on, rather than simply Rainbow crashing through a window).
Not much here yet, but I'm sold on what there is.

Oh god... this story is just getting better.
She then uses her ghost-finding spell and sees he has listened to her, and Starswirl finds out he can use the wendigo-ability: Freeze, causing him to fight back and winning without even trying, because he is Starswirl. Fluttershy then panics and grabs the next book( Starswirls journal) and closes it so she can hold it in front of herself. Because she closed it Starswirl gets sucked back inside.
I guess you could say his plans weren't that CRYSTAL clear.
Interesting story. Last chapter to short in my opinion.
