Remember that EU copyright law from a few months back? Well, if you haven't heard, it was narrowly passed yesterday. But don't go holing up in a bunker with an assault rifle and printouts of your Read Later shelf just yet. As Nyronus's blog explains, there's a lot more of the process left, and a few remaning rays of hope. For one, as a small site full of transformative works, Fimfiction might be exempt twice over. The catch, of course, is that "might." The Union-level stuff is a set of guidelines; it's up to each member nation to decide how to interpret and enforce them. And there's a lot to interpret.

To those of you in the Union, please make it clear to your MEPs that they're poking the wrong bear here, and that backing this will condemn them and their bloodlines unto the seventh generation.

Only, you know, politely.

Because it just didn't feel like the world is burning down this year quite enough for my tastes.

With the proper application of a VPN, any silly rules like that become null in void

Really? I didn't know VPNs could overcome, say, ContentID automatically taking down YouTube videos.

Unless the video is taken down worldwide, its going to be viewable in another country, just set the vpn for that country and you can watch it

The idea of government changing its ways because its plans are stupid and unworkable is... novel, but here's hoping anyway.

That said, I can't help bearing in mind the fact that Hasbro could doubtless have C&D'd this site years ago if they'd felt like it. Also that in at least some of the EU (certainly the UK) "Fair Use" isn't a thing in the first place. The UK has "Fair Dealing" which is more restrictive -- it still protects you if you're using extracts for review purposes, for example, but until fairly recently it didn't even have a parody exemption.

Celestia knows what happens in the in-the-EU-but-soon-won't-be UK in any case. For those wanting to get involved, though, make sure you read up on European ways of doing things, specifically your own country's if relevant. Quoting US laws and practices at MEPs won't end well.

What FOME is saying (I believe) is that when governments implement big policy like this, it usually hits the corporations, like YouTube, in such a manner that the companies feel it is easier to just implement a blanket policy of taking down or blocking content. And if a company is instituting measures like that, then VPN access won’t matter.

Oy, you got a loicense for those memes you posted? I'll be over here eating a burger and clapping to my heart's content while I upload 'cute funny cat gif 7' to imgur without worrying about copyright infringement

See, normally this would concern me, but with the whole 'brexit' thing happening, as much as I was against it, I have no idea what to think. Will this apply to me? If so, how? Will it be for long? So many wuestions!

:raritycry::raritydespair:

Nothing constructive to say: just wanted to panic :applecry:

Instructions unclear. Rampage imminent. Look for a Dark Rainbow :pinkiecrazy:

Its google that would use a vpn to host its youtube site.

The list of staggeringly harmful, maliciously stupid and downright indefensible things my government's actively doing right now is so long I've lost count. As unworkable and broken as this not-yet-legislation is, it doesn't even break the top 10 this month.

😞

I'm American, so this doesn't affect me, but this is a load of horseshit.

Peculiar Pretzelmen's Pass the Kerosene perhaps?

This towns like a ship that was built to sink,
Taking on water while they pass around drinks,
Too busy to notice the whole structures unsound
wearing their delusion like a dislodged crown

First they came for the memes...

Look up Audible Magic. While the political overtones and implications of this whole mess are pretty clear, at its core this is just another case of corporate lobbying interfering in politics. In this case, an American corporation.

So yeah, it's a little closer to home, your home in particular, than you might think. These guys are already working on your turf, and you've probably already gotten mad at them without realising. Just look at their customer list.
