Paragraph Formatting on Fimfiction

Something that often trips up writers on Fimfiction are paragraphs. I'm sure that you, dear reader, know what a paragraph is, but how does the site know whether you intend to make a paragraph? Furthermore, how should paragraphs even look anyway? Should they be intended, double spaced or both? Fortunately for you, this article exists to answer these questions.

How Fimfiction Sees Paragraphs

The answer to this is quite simple. When you're writing a chapter, you basically have 2 options for Fimfiction recognising a paragraph.

Double Line Breaks

"Twilight Sparkle is a very pretty purple pony," said Fluttershy.

"Yeehaw!" responded Applejack

The first, and most standard is to simply separate your paragraphs with 2 line breaks.

Indents

"Twilight Sparkle is a very pretty purple pony," said Fluttershy.
	"Yeehaw!" responded Applejack

The second method is to indent your paragraphs. You can do this with spaces or a tab character.

Single Line Break

"Twilight Sparkle is a very pretty purple pony," said Fluttershy.
"Yeehaw!" responded Applejack

Don't do this. This will not create a paragraph! Single line breaks are useful in certain circumstances like putting a written letter or poetry into your story but not for the entire story's content.

Triple Line Break

"Twilight Sparkle is a very pretty purple pony," said Fluttershy.

"Yeehaw!" responded Applejack

Three line breaks will create a section break. It will indeed create paragraphs but they'll be spaced extra far apart and that's no good. Only use triple line breaks when you actually do want a section break.

You'll know when you're doing it right because you'll see the paragraph count getting bigger at the bottom of the editor.

How Users See Paragraphs

Maybe this seems like a weird question. Surely if you double space your paragraphs they'll see them like that, and if you indent them they'll see indents? Well, not quite. Everyone has different preferences for reading, and for this reason we chose to make paragraphs an option that readers can choose.

This way, everyone gets to see stories in a consistent format that they enjoy reading. It's very important that you make sure to designate your paragraphs with either method above otherwise your story will be a giant wall of text and be failed for being unreadable. As well as this, site features like bookmarking and text to speech reading require paragraphs, so without them your story would be missing important functionality that readers enjoy!
