The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Damn, never featured for anythin'.

Oh. My. God. How can a measly panel contain so much win?

479484

They're really going all-out with this one, it seems.

Don't break my channel, D.

Wanderer D
Moderator

479493 I honestly don't know how many people actually logged in last time. But... well, if it breaks it will be for a good cause!

479499
I was there and my guess was around 100, judging by the traffic in the chatroom. Maybe.

Wow, that's an impressive list of authors. I am SO there! I better reserve my spot early like last time. :twilightsheepish:

CHROMOSOME!

I have so many things to ask

And more importantly I get to hear his smooth, succulent voice.

I take it we post the comments here?

Well... If not, I tried at least.

Shortskirtsandexplosions - What inspired you to write "Nopony Needs to Know"?

Whee, announcement up!

I am excitebike for this.

SS&E!!!!! <3
:twilightoops: I'm sure the rest of you are great, but he's really the only one I read :twilightblush:

Will definitely be tuning into this one.

Hmm, questions...

I'll go think up of embarassing things to ask Chromosone.

Also, I ought to join in on one of these one day. If only to ask philosophical questions and humm endlessly.

Question for everyone.

What's the best comment you've ever seen on any of your fics?

... I don't see this getting answered, but what the hell.

my question for the panel: what is the number one thing a writer can do to make you want to tear their story to pieces?

A question for Skirts--Does your writing process differ at all when you write a thought-provoking story like The Last Tears in Tartarus or Background Pony versus something weirder like Bon Bon Bon Bon Bon Bon or Lyra Meets the Punisher?

Questions!
For all the authors: Do you draw on personal experience to inspire your writing, or is most of what you come up with pulled out of thin air? Do you write what you know about, or do you simply run with an idea that catches your imagination? Obviously this isn't an either-or question, but I'm still curious to see what you all will say.

For Vimbert: Which of your works currently published on FimFiction would you call your 'favorite'? (It's totally fair if you can't choose just one.) Is there any one story of yours in particular that you feel is particularly under appreciated? It seems that a big theme of many of your more serious work is digging into the psychology of major characters. Is there any particular reason why you enjoy getting 'into the heads' of our cartoon ponies? Finally, "The Price" is a really good take on a homosexual pairing story, and carries a lot of good insight into such a relationship and other's perceptions of homosexuality. What inspired you to write that story, particularly on a topic that many inside the fandom seem less-than-receptive of?

For Chromosome: Obviously your story "Air" is inspired by Mirror's Edge, but there are a large number of original elements in the story that set it apart from the source material. Where did you come up with some of those ideas? For example, the spell that keeps pegasai from flying: was it out of necessity for the plot (flying ponies make freerunning a little unnecessary) that you invented that element, or did you initially intend for it to be a metaphor for the oppressive state of Equestria? Finally, what inspired the idea and the well-known format for "White Box"? I'll miss you, buddy!

For Cold in Gardez: I'm not terribly familiar with much of your work, outside of "The Carnivore's Prayer" (which is easily one of the better stories to come out of this fandom, in my opinion). Would you say that you're more well known for your tragic stories or your other work? What sort of content (Tragedy, Comedy, etc.) do you enjoy writing most? Do you feel that your time in the military had an influence on what you write about and the sorts of characters you create? Finally, I know that there are a lot of military-based stories on FimFiction (Many "human in equestria" stories are particularly fond of putting modern soldiers into Equestria). Do you feel that the subject is handled well by those who have no actual military experience, or do you feel that there are, invariably, lots of anachronisms, mistakes, or romanticizing of warfare/combat in such stories?

For ShortSkirtsandExplosions: You're easily one of the most prolific writers in the fandom, and you've written a fairly wide range of stories. Is there a genre that you have not yet tackled, but would like to? Though many of your stories are very good, are there any that you have written and, after the fact, said to yourself, "Sweet Celestia, why'd I submit that?!" You cannot answer this question with "I Remember Rainbow Dash". Finally, are the philosophies that are presented in a lot of your larger stories (Background Pony and End of Ponies in particular) indicative of your personal beliefs, or are you simply using them as a vehicle to add greater depth to your work? Live long and dash apples.

Vimbert the Unimpressive: Why did you want to write Twilight, Revised or what inspired you to write that story? Such a sick, dark, twisted, but damn good story. I'm really curious.

What an awesome panel... going up a 3AM in my place. :fluttercry:
Could someone please please please record it ? :pinkiesad2:

Cold in Gardez: I'm constantly impressed by your writing style and update frequency, and absolutely floored by the amount of detail and emotion you can portray in your stories (notably Glass Blower and Salvation). When you begin writing, is there any particular way you prepare, such as music or location, that helps you focus? Also, out of the MLP stories you've written, which do you consider your best or most unique?

479493 As long as it's no the Chocobo being blamed, I don't care! Everypony ALWAYS blames the Chocobo! (Racist jerks!)

All authors:

What inspired you to write your first fic? What motivated you to write it?

Chrome divorced me, and I need one of you guys to function as my temporary SHIL (Super-Hetero Internet Lover) to make him jealous. Which one of you other three feels up to the task?

Holy hell. You could do an entire panel with Skirts or CiG individually.
I mean, Vim is awesome too and Chomosome is a great writer but they aren't quite as prolific.
Then again, those first 3 have a bit of cross interaction going on so that could be interesting.

Normal questions this time:

My first question to all: Which of your stories do you wish had more popularity and exposure, and which received more than you expected?

My 2nd question to any: We don't often see co-authored stories among the bigger authors in the fandom. Is this something you would consider, and if so, who would you like to collaborate with, if you could?

Backup question to all: CROSSOVERS! What is your favorite (preferably pony, but non-pony is OK) and what crossover would you like to read (or write)?

For all the authors: What do you do when you just don't feel like writing? Do you have a collection of pony puns for names of things and famous people that you reference, or do you come up with them as needed for each story? If you had to pick a single character that you've written, which would you say most closely mirrors your personality, if it's one you have done multiple different takes on, which story's version of that character? If you only consider fanfiction you have written or read, which of the mane six is your least favorite? What characters do you find hardest to write, and do you know why? What kinds of things in canon do you choose to gloss in fiction? For instance, the technology level that we see in some episodes is inconsistent, so how do you choose to view it? Does it depend entirely on the story you're writing? Do you think writing MLP fanfiction has been an overall positive influence on your skill as a creative thinker and writer? What is the most important thing you could say writing for this community has taught you?

Vimbert: Since I haven't read any of your own work, how about an editing question: As an editor do you ever find yourself with a problem just writing a draft without constantly looking back and fixing things? Do you hang up your editor's jacket so to speak when you try to write, or do you do something else?

Chromosome: How many alleles do you think the MLP ponies would have to have, to include the genetic variety in the species? Are you having fun writing about Big Mac as a mare? ^.^

ShortSkirtsandExplosions: Do you ever find yourself getting emotional when you write a particular scene? Are you a robot? It's easy to see philosophical influences in your writings, do you include them consciously, and do you believe them? When will the world at large get to finally latch onto the sympathetic character that is Wart? What is the source of the frantic energy you devote into writing fanfiction? Do you ever devote that same energy to other writing, or to anything else?

PresentPerfect
Author Interviewer

Ooh, quite the lineup! :3

Can i ask Chromosome what he was thinking? I mean really, Chromosome: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? D:

479960

Everyone ignore this man. He's mean and nasty and doesn't care about anyone's feelings.

Hoboy. This is quite the panel. I'll have to think of some questions and come back later...

Short... Skirts... panel....

That's terribly exciting. I'm not familiar with CiG, but I'm incomparably thrilled to hear from Vimbert, Chromosome, and SHORTSKIRTSANDEXPLOSIONS!!!!

Thank you, Wanderer D. I'll forever feel indebted to you.

No specific questions from me. I've wrung every answer I can think of out of Skirts. I'll be content just to hear the sultry, dulcet tones of my hero their voices. *squee*!

Ahh, Chromosome is on the panel. No wonder this panel suddenly has a Singapore friendly time, awesome! :pinkiehappy:

479483 Trust me when I say I know the feeling and I hit the featured box.

…for about thirty minutes before falling off…

480524
You should be a special guest on the panel. Because hilarity.

Ew, Cold in Gardez? Who wants to listen to that guy?

Honestly now.

This sounds interesting

I am terrible at these, but how could I pass this up? (Even though I'll be at school during the Stream,) let's mark my calendar and make some questions for you all to digress on.

For the lot of you: Do any of you have any made up words that you casually slip into your writings, and if so do you care to share their proposed meanings? Secondly, which is a much less silly question, what has inspired some of your favorite fics and have you had any troubles writing them? How do you go about your writing process? Do you simply make it up as you go along, or do you write out a timeline of events to keep yourself on track? Lastly, I think everyone could stand to know this, but how do you push yourselves to write? How do you overcome the feeling of just not wanting to write?

For Vimbert: As an editing question, what would you say is the most rewarding/difficult fic for you to have preread and why? And what errors do you tend to spot the most? Also, I heard you think Twilight is best pony.

For Chromosome: Fluttershy. If you sing the MLP intro on the livestream all by yourself, I will draw you Fluttershy wearing a hoodie. I also want to know what inspired you to write Anno Domini.

For SSaE: I think the most obvious question is how in the hell can you churn out so many words in such a relatively short amount of time? Do you ever find yourself getting emotional when you write? Lastly, how many messages in your notification/inbox do you receive on a daily basis?

For Gardez: I've been meaning to ask you this for a while now. When I read The Wind Theif, I was blown away by the epic fight scenes. How do you do it, and do you have any tips of advice to others who wish to write epic fight scenes?

481303
I get Fluttershy and all it costs me is my dignity?

Make it a polo instead and you've got yourself a deal.

For all authors: What is your writing process? Do you have ways of overcoming writer's block? Do you have certain writing styles that you like to pursue?

Aaaaand lastly - in all of your opinions, who is best pony and why? :twilightsheepish:

Woah, that is one heck of a panel, I think I might even try stay up for this one :pinkiehappy:
In the meantime, have some questions:

Question 1: (To all authors)
What motivated you to first put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and begin writing creatively? When in your life did you first start doing so?

Question 2: (To all authors)
Have any of you written outside the scope of pony-fiction? If so, what have you written? Do any of you have plans to write outside of pony-fiction or write professionally? If you were to write professionally, what kind of story would you like to do?

Question 3: (ShortSkirts&Explosions)
Do you ever read the speculation at the bottom of chapters in the Austraeoh series and laugh at how wrong we are? :rainbowwild: Alternatively, have you ever altered the story-line because someone was too close to the mark.

Question 4: (To all authors)
To what extent does music influence your writing? Have the lyrics to a song or its tune ever triggered the beginnings of a story? What kind of music, if any, do you use when writing your stories?

Question 5: (To all authors)
What is the stupidest, most absurd, wierdest or just plain funniest thing someone has ever said to you?

That's all I can think of for now, I can't wait to see the panel

CiG, you write stories in a number of completely unrelated genres. Does your writing process differ for, say, Michael Bay stuff and The Carnivore's Dilemma Prayer?

For all four of them, how far in advance do you plan and how does your editing process work?
For Chromosome, what the hell were you thinking when you wrote White Box: True Colors?
For Chromosome and SS&E, what was it like to do the LOEG thing with each other?
For SS&E, I've sort of gotten the impression that you resent how successful Background Pony has been in comparison to your other works (TVTropes calls it Magnum Opus Dissonance). Is this accurate, and if so, what work of yours do you think is the best?
I may have more questions for SS&E after the end of Background Pony goes up. I'll probably add another comment instead of editing this one.
(Also, can I ask questions of the moderators? I want to know what the worst legitimate story, as in a story that was a genuine work and not an attempt at trolling, you've ever had to read was.)
Ooh, thought of another one for all of them: what are your thoughts on collaborations?

To Cold in Gardez,
You have two very distinct types of stories, your comedies like "The Contest" and "The Cutie Mark Conspiracy" and the more mature ones like "The Glass Blower" and "Salvation". Which type do you like writing more? Which type do you feel is easier to write? Which do you feel more proud of when you're done?
To all,
Do you write Sad stuff specifically to make us sad, or does it kind of just...happen? (What I mean is do you set out to make us sad, and craft a story with that goal in mind, or do you write a story, and then it just gets sad?)

479484 Because Short Skirts is amazing.

My question for Short Skirts. Do you think you will make another epic (or get accidentily side tracked into making one) instead of continuing End of Ponies?

Twitch > Livestream :c

Question for Short Skirts and Explosions:

How do you write so quickly? Maybe you've answered this before, but all I seem to recall is that one blog you posted with times and word counts, where the goal was to prove you didn't write all the time, like I guess some people thought you did. So I know that isn't the case, but still, actually looking at those times and word counts reveals that you type approximately 2,000 words per hour, if I remember correctly. That's is more than quadruple my own average speed (which I don't consider to be all that terrible).

So I ask, how? I personally am forced to stop and really, really think about what I'm going to type next if I want it to sound nice. Do the words just flow more naturally to you? Do you have an amazingly detailed outline to work from? Do you just abandon all hope of quality on the first time through and do a 'speed run' of sorts, with the intent to edit it to perfection later? Drugs?

(Or am I just an incredibly slow writer, and everybody but me types this quickly?)

Question for everybody:

What is your general writing process? Detail your procedure from point A to point B, point A being a blank word document, and point B being an actual published chapter.

But, but, that is my last day of school before thanksgiving break. Why man, why. Just kidding, not gonna make a big deal over it. If its still up when I get home, then by all means, I'll be there.

To shortskirtsandexplosions:
You often use background or side characters from the show in your fics, and then proceed to characterize them to or beyond the point the show has characterized the mane six. You very rarely however, write from the perspective of an OC character. What is the difference for you?

Questions for anyone:
How do you start and continue a story, while keeping the quality consistent with each chapter, or at least something close to it?
How and why did you start writing? (Motivations?)

Cold in Gardez:
Your stuff is great.

Question for everyone.
What sort of references do you like to include in your work and how much joy do you get out of readers noticing these?
(for instance I have tons of fun finding and planting these)

ex-shorts and skirtsplosions:
has the nearly year-long hiatus on the End of Ponies been refreshing? did you then/do you now have a clear idea of what is to occur next?
