This story provides Snips and Snails a great backstory, interesting personalities, an entertaining and very convincing first person narrator character voice, and quite a fun and often funny plot.

(For the record, the first review was actually written when the story was still in the "New Stories" box, but I'll be holding off publishing it until I have a few other stories I wanna recommend. So if it's gotten more popular over the ensuing weeks… then… who cares, exactly. Get off my case.)
Not usually a big person for doing this but I feel like referring a few fics that aren't getting the love they deserve, don't expect in depth analysis I've never been one to do so as it often lessens the joy I get from reading.

So, this isn't quite a review, but I've had it with this story not getting the attention it needs.
Scarlet is a intrigue/drama/action story about a war-scarred mare, Scarlet, who has her life overturned when she finds a filly named, Primrose, in her house on a stormy night. Primrose has a lamp, that some shadowy forces seem to want, and they'll do anything to get it. Including killing them both.
So I'm trying something new today here at Unusual Things. I've had the idea for a post series like this in the back of my head for a while now, and while it's not going to be a regular series like Being a Better Writer is, I do hope it might be an occasional counterpart.
This book is good enough that I'm going to give a brief overview of it.

Edited to add: In view of the second seven chapters that were added to the story after the first seven, this story still has many good qualities, but some of the additions are not exactly 'fun' in the most direct sense. I still recommend it as an interesting AU, though.
When a story that is imho good and more fun as a story and better written than most fimfiction.net stories just doesn't fit the demographic and gets an amazingly low number of reads...(at least so far)
Whoa. When I joined this little community, I honestly didn't expect to stay this long. But for the past few months it became almost an everyday routine for me to start reading MLP fics at 10 pm until midnight, when I usually go to sleep. And come to think of it, this prepares me to sleep much better than trying to improve my CSGO skills, which usually ends with me rage-quitting and loudly cursing the living hell out of all russian players. For some time, I have consdered starting a group that existed for readers to ask for story recommendations based on what elements and other criteria they want to see. However, I just haven't had the motivation to do it.
Today, I found a new-ish group with a very simular premise, but it is in serious need of members.
If anyone is interested, the group is The related story finders.
It's been quite a while since I last posted one of these, but here we are again. I might have been tempted to review this fic, rather than recommend, but it's early days yet. For now though, I have a recommendation, my good ladies and gentlemen.
Anyone who has ever paid any attention to me has probably heard me talk about DbzOrDie. He's one of my best friends, as well as being 90% of the reason I ever write anything, between our brainstorming sessions and him pushing me to finish things and proofreading everything I write.
I was writing an essay about how fan-fiction transcends literary movements, and got stuck on New Criticism. Everybody said it was important, but I didn't know how it fit into my grumpy meta-narrative that those damn 20th-century kids ruined everything.
Because I have nothing else to do right now. Have a list of stories I really like, in no particular order. Some of these have commentary. :V
A lot of these stories are older fics. I stopped reading nearly as many fics here after a while due to time after high school and college began.

Dubious Enchantment by bookplayer. This is a cute story about Twilight trying to get Pinkie's money back for some purchases she made from a merchant of artifacts of unspeakable evil. 2nd place winner in the Feb. write-off. That was, like, today.
You've seen FanOfMostEverything. He's everywhere. Look, down below, in the comments: he's there. I like it when I get a chance to recommend a story by somepony who does a lot for the community. You may have read his "Mandatory Fun" last year.
