As I write this blog update, I have entered the portion where I rewrite Nova comforting Twilight after Trixie's taunting. The original chapter is about 9,500 words long. As I start writing this new scene, the chapter is just past 13,000 words.
There's a relatively simple explanation for this. Extended scenes, for various reasons.
So, the story behind this is that I am taking a cryptography class over the summer, and am learning about codes and ciphers. Specifically, I have learned that transforming alphanumeric characters into symbols is actually a relatively weak way to encode things. It's supposed to be a code that's baffled crytoanalysts for over a millennium an isn't broken.
1) Nova and Twilight are definitely meshing a lot better now that he's fully developed she's truer to her character. There's already some slight chemistry building between them when it really wasn't until next chapter in the original version where Nova started to really play better with Twilight.
So as I rewrite Chapter 3 of Apprentice, the chapter's going to be extended. Another scene will play out, if you will, compared to how it currently is.
And also, there will definitely be a bit more to add in Chapter 4 between Nova and Trixie. Keeping in mind, of course, that Tantalus unintentionally put Trixie into Celestia's School at Nova's expense, it would make sense that there would be some enmity between them, even if it was one-sided.
I'll try to do this every time I post a rewritten chapter. Document the changes, comment on my thoughts on the rewrite, etc.
Well, first off, I love how quickly old-Nova fitted into his new role. Back when I first wrote this, he was still a shell of who he would be, and after some time, he finally developed. Now it just feels like he's already fully developed as a character, but not all that development has been revealed to the audience. Really enjoying writing him like this.
The first of hopefully several to come, the better to get to know my characters outside of their stories, but without posting a side-stories compilation. That didn't work.

Nova - I already have a partner. We just haven't gotten married yet.

Nova - Didn't I answer that last time? When you banished me to the basement for a week's worth of nights?
Twilight - Just do it, Nova.
It's really weird, but I feel like I'm revisiting a very old friend while I rewrite the first chapter of Apprentice. Older Nova has, politely enough, stayed out of my way while I write his younger self, which makes it even easier. It's really tough to describe.
But this being said, I'm a little over halfway into the revised first chapter of Apprentice, and I expect to have it posted soon. Will probably just delete the old chapter and slap the new one on there.
About a month ago, I submitted Apprentice to EqD for consideration. Naturally, I was turned down, else the story would be a lot more popular than it actually is. Or at least have more likes/dislikes. Anyway, the point is, I've decided to re-revise the first chapter.
So, first off, allow me to just throw out there, I haven't written a single word on any of my stories in about a month. Literally. I've been busy with school and stuff, but I used to be able to find some time to squeeze some writing in there. But for the last few weeks, I haven't been able to. Maybe that's why I feel off about life in general right now. Hopefully once finals are over, I can go back to business as usual.
