All Art Is Quite Useless

When I'm not writing stories, I'm writing essays. My keyboard sees fairly frequent use. University student, high functioning Rainbow Dash enthusiast, and satirical activist.

E

After yet another heroic feat—during which Rainbow Dash saved hundreds of ponies from a terrible fate—Princess Celestia has decided that Rainbow is to be knighted.

Rainbow isn't sure whether she should be excited or terrified.

Be afraid. Be very afraid of my knighting blade.

Before I read This, it gets an Insta favourite because it's AAIQU writing it

And here it is. Top notch work, mate!

Yeah... it's amazing either way.

Very good  A really detailed reflection story on the varying aspects of fame, and the blessing and curse of trust, resting on one's shoulders. I think you couldn't choose a better pony for that. Also, a spectacular ending!

One thing that seemed a little off to me was the airship accident at the beginning. I understand that Cloudsdale is probably really high and that the ship had to break loose of all the anchorages first, but still, with all the things Rainbow and the Wonderbolts did, it seemed as if it was falling for an eternity. Contrary to that, the description was giving off the idea of 'they'll splat on the ground the next second'.

8415061
I'll watch out for it!

8415068
That's actually lovely man. I didn't realise you stuck around since opinions, but I'm glad for it! Hope you enjoy/enjoyed!

8415073
Thanks mate! Cheers for having a look at it too, it helped!

8415101
Cheers matey, glad you liked it!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the story, and appreciated the ending! It's nice to see you reading my stuff again.

As for the airship incident, I tried to make it appear as if everything was happening in rapid succession, rather than there being fast breaks. Wonderbolts are pretty fast fliers, after all, and Rainbow's the fastest of all. Maybe I didn't pull that off so well, in which case my defence is 'Namek time'.

Still, thanks for pointing it out!

And thanks to everyone for commenting, it's nice to see that my story is appreciated!

Yeah I did. Just forgot to follow until now.

Important wizard is quite good btw.

A very thoughtful, interesting story. Nicely done!

Is it weird that this story had me at the edge of my seat? :pinkiegasp: this was...amaaaaaaazing...I loved it!

This was a wonderfully thought-provoking read. I enjoyed it very much.

However, there's only one thing I'd suggest you change about it, for correctness: the female equivalent title for knighthood is "Dame", not "Sir". :rainbowderp:

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

The fact I've accomplished that without this being an adventure is pretty awesome. Thanks a lot!

First off, thank you very much for the compliments! I'm glad I was able to produce something you enjoyed!

Second, you are right, and I'm glad that you've pointed this out. In fact, I was aware of this before writing, and it was going to be one of this story's focal points, but I ended up taking that section out in the end. The reason I kept the title (and relevant scenes in the story) as is is purely aesthetic. Namely, I think 'Sir Rainbow Dash' has a better ring to it than 'Dame Rainbow Dash'. Now, I'm sure that might be a source of irritation for those that prefer complete factual accuracy in their stories, but with this small element aside I have attempted to produce an accurate and believeable story, and I hope that shines through!

Thanks for making that point though, I hope it wasn't too jarring!

And a big thanks to everyone who commented!

I love this story.

Technically, it'd be Dame Rainbow Dash.

8416696
Technically, it would be, but I've covered this in my last comment. Thanks for mentioning though!

AAIQU

Female knight should be dame, I believe. Either that or simply Lady, but I believe that's an alternative in Britain solely because women couldn't be knights for a long time. Either way, Sir is gendered, it really should be Dame Rainbow Dash.

Also, Dame sounds cooler.

8416723
Yeah, I'm completely aware that 'sir' is a male honorific, and that the proper term for a knighted female (by the British standard, at least) is Dame.

As aforementioned, I had reasons for not using the title 'dame'. It was going to be a focal point of the story (Celestia's decision to give Rainbow a male title, and why she might do such a thing), but that got cut out. Once I cut out that section of the story, I looked at the title, and other relevant areas of the story that still contained 'sir', and decided to let it stay, almost purely for aesthetic reasons.

I'm not trying to argue that 'sir' is a gender-neutral word here, nor that Rainbow Dash is masculine, I just thought it had a nicer ring to it as it was. That's my only reason for the omission of the word dame, despite the fact that it would be more factually accurate.

In short, it's artistic license, not an accidental error. I didn't mean for it to prove as distracting for readers. Being British myself, and knowing that a majority of Fimfic's users reside in the states, I wasn't sure whether the average reader would be particularly knowledgeable on the titles of knights.

Hopefully you can understand my reasoning here! Thank you for mentioning though, and for commenting!

There actually is a gender neutral form of "Sir" and "Dame." It's used in Game of Thrones. "Ser."

8416812

Ser is a thing, but it's less common than dame, so even less likely people would know it.

8416801

Tbh i was assuming you probably didn't know because, as you said, most of fimfic is english and uh... They're not exactly known for their awareness of other countries history and culture. But yeah, nothing wrong with it if it looks better to you, i just personally prefer dame, as i said, it's way cooler as a title. It's like in a german inspired setting, having someone referedd to as x von y is way cooler than just call them sir x y, y'know? Just my personal tastes.

8417084
I would argue that Game of Throne is popular enough that people would probably be all like "oh hey I know that shit."

8416715
*nodnods* Fair enough. Good story, either way.

8417128

when people only know a term from something popular and they see it somewhere else, they tend to assume that person is stealing it. Yes, even when it's as small and stupid as a title.

People can be fucking dumb.

8417506
... As... opposed to these completely... original... characters... in this... fanfic...?

8417755

Like I said- dumb people.

Amazing read. Will there be a follow up?

An excellent idea, perfectly executed.

I really enjoyed this story "All Art Is Quite Useless", thank you very much for this Awesome story. :pinkiehappy:

Will there be a follow up?

Good question... If you find an answer for the above quote, pls send a reply this way.

*clap clap clap*
Nicely done. It really cuts into some emotion, something I can't properly describe... kind of like how Rainbow couldn't immediately identify the cause of her trembling before getting knighted.

My regret is that I didn't find this gem of a story sooner.
