For sure. This is why I personally don't do well with commissions and requests - I keep trying to inject what I want into them, lol.
I wrote a similar story as a request once involving mind-hijacking and mind-control, but I excessively leaned into the pseudo-death aspect of it with characters frantically scrambling to avoid having their minds erased and effectively killed - I dont think the requestor liked it very much haha. after it became clear the original requestor was no longer interested, i took the story in an insane direction, added an animated chapter, and added two ridiculous epilogues that barely even tie into the main story lmao
