Hey everyone! I've had a nice little break, but it has officially wrapped up. Technically, it wrapped up a few days ago now, but today is the first day I've put new words into a chapter of Chromatic Aberration since my break started.

When can you expect the new entry? Probably in a week, maybe two. It's going to be a shorter one (for realsies this time) as it's an intermission and I have a different word cap for those than my regular chapters. I would maybe like to deliver it alongside the new chapter as well, but I won't know if that'll happen yet. We'll see!

What can you expect from this new entry? I usually prefer to keep these things to myself, but I've decided to spill on this one since it's something I've stated would happen in the beginning of the story. The new intermission will be an intermediary piece during the events of Rainbow Rocks. It takes place in the middle of (what I would consider to be) the sixth chapter of the movie, and that's about all I'll say on that. After the intermission, we will be outside of established canon territory and back into that weird, murky, canonical grey area I thrive in.

When writing these fics, I tend to stay out of the time frame of any canon material because I feel like it's kind of wonky to work around it. There are times in which I want to tweak or amend canon details, but imo that becomes harder to do when you write in a chronological window so close to those details. And if you write around them too much, you risk writing an AU instead.

On that note, if I'm being totally honest, I'm not exactly sure where people draw the line on "alternate universe" and I'd like to avoid that line if I can. Not that I'm against anyone else writing AUs—my favorite fic of all time is an AU, after all—but I would prefer my plot wanderings to come after what is considered the chronological, canon end to the series. Is that a hint as to what I'm planning in the future? You bet.

Speaking of plans for the future, for those interested: the CYSWIS rewrite (tentatively titled CYS as of this moment) is definitely 100% happening. No more being cheeky about whether or not it's going to happen; I am fully committing to it. As I've said before, it will be quite some time before I actually get to posting it, but it will happen.

If you're writing this off because you've read the first one and know generally how things will go down, I ask that you keep an open mind because the outline I have for the new version gets into some Very Different territory than the original. My hope is that with that prospect, the generous smattering of new chapters between all the original existing ones (all of which will be rewritten from the ground up as well), and the more expansive and in-depth character interactions will entice you enough to consider reading it when it drops. I'm biased because I'm the author, but if you thought the original hit hard, I'm giving the new one a really long wind up before it knocks you out.

That's about all I got for today. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the new chapter when it drops!

The EQG canon and timeline is such a mess and some of the late EQG shorts get so fucking weird. Honestly I feel the murkiness of the timeline and over-the-shark shorts are one of the advantages EQG has over FIM when it comes to fanfiction. The world being so undeveloped and no one really caring much about the canon outside of the movies gives plenty of room to play around in, whereas FIM's events and timeline are much more set in stone. At least that's my impression.

Especially when you consider that EQG never really had a canon ending. It sucks that we didn't get closure, but it's also nice that we get to decide where these girls end up, unlike FIM.

EQG fics thrive in that murky pseudo-AU area, imo.

You get me! I remember the first long fic I ever wrote was a main series fic and I had to do so much research and work to make sure I didn't accidentally trip up and miss a detail or write something conflicting with a part of canon, and yet I still managed to do both of those things. It was rewarding, but felt very restrictive at the same time. Then, when I started writing EqG stuff, I noticed how much easier it was to just Roll with things. It's a series with so many blanks left to fill, so many things looking for an explanation, etc.

As much as I believe the series deserved better than what it got (from a production standpoint at least—I love almost all the content that was made for it), the haphazard way it's put together leaves so much to work with, and also makes me feel much better about taking liberties when it comes to canonical things and continuity.
