A day after it was announced she was entering hospice treatment due to dementia, it has been announced that former first lady Rosalynn Carter has died: She was 96 years old.
As first lady, she actually set up her own office within the White House and was actively involved in many of the policies of her husband Jimmy Carter's administration. She was also by his side for the roughly four decades they spent together on humanitarian projects after leaving the White House in 1981. She and Jimmy became the longest living president and first lady couple in 2018 following the deaths of George H. W. and Barbra Bush. They both remained active into their 90's.
Among other things, Rosalynn was a huge champion for the Equal Rights Amendment, which failed to be ratified by the states. She also served on a commission for mental health, and later became co-founder of the Carter Center. She published her auto-biography in 1984.
Rosalynn will be remembered fondly by those who knew her or got to meet her.

For all their faults, the Carters had a tremendous personal integrity that cannot be overlooked. I hope that future ladies take notes on Rosalynn Carter and the example she tried to set.
