Greetings, folks! This is Mr. J back with another movie review for today. This morning, I will be reviewing the second BB movie entitled “Bad Boys 2” released in the year 2003. To be honest, this movie was just as epic and heart-stopping as was the first installment. However, it is littered with more glaring flaws when it comes to the plot and the characters.

This film continues the story of our bad boys—Marcus and Mike—as they have yet another crime boss to fight against. Only this time, this deadly action-packed adventure will involve Marcus’s sister which puts both of them on edge. Will our heroes work together or let their personal issues get in the way?

In my opinion, the action is a lot more thrilling in this movie than in the first one. Despite the use of the shaky camera technique, the cinematography made the action so chaotic and goosebumps-inducing. It makes you come at the edge of your seat, and it did a successful job in creating such intense moments that justifies its R rating.

The acting is also just as flawless as before. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith once again knocked it out of the park with their incredible performance. At this point, I can consider these characters to be my utmost favorite protagonists in these movies.

But like I said, this movie has some problems, and they are a lot more…questionable and eye-rolling.

Marcus has said that once they are finished with taking their big bad antagonist down, he will no longer be Mike’s partner due to a transfer he has to follow. But by the end of the movie, it was neither followed through nor was it ever mentioned again. So…did he reject the transfer? Did he change his mind? It was treated like a serious plotline that would’ve served as a way to create conflict within the story, but it got no resolution at the end.

Syd was a pretty good character overall, but her character arc hardly had any development whatsoever. The film didn’t spend enough time to dig deep into the relationship between her and Mike; furthermore, their secret get-together behind Marcus’s back played a role into their drama, but it hardly affected the story. It makes me wonder what was even the purpose of that subplot.

Just like the previous villain, Johnny Tapia is also one-note and boring. The only interesting aspect of his character is that he genuinely loves his daughter and mother…while he does his dirty business behind their backs. Otherwise, he is just another generic bad guy for our bad boys to take down.

The comedy is overall decent, but there are a couple of scenes that felt rather unfunny and unnecessary. For example, Marcus accidentally took a couple drugs while drinking water during their investigation of the corpses that contained the money and drugs.

Marcus then gets high and acts super weird. It was…not necessary to incorporate into the movie, in my opinion. It wasn’t funny, and it felt so forced. Not to mention the part where he had to hurriedly hide somewhere from being found—hiding with a dead naked woman.

I’m fully aware I’m watching a Michael Bay movie, but come on, Bay, did you seriously expect me to just laugh at such dumb humor?

And lastly, I was genuinely surprised by how abrupt the ending was. Like, are we not gonna allow our characters to process everything that happened and to actually have their arcs completed? Just kill the bad guy and then end the movie? That’s it? I expected more to happen, but it is what it is.

Overall, I still enjoy this movie. Regardless of the number of flaws it has, it has some solid action sequences and great acting performances from its main and supporting cast. The dialogue wasn’t that bad either except for some unfunny jokes here and there. But overall, this is pretty great. 8/10 is what it deserves.

Peace!
