Please welcome the Cadencervres's new background brigade!
Well some of them anyway.
I would probably feel compelled to set the series in Ponyville, though I have seen an excellent AU, that changes all but Twilight around as bearers and sets the story in a city, which I find highly interesting. I could also maybe change Ponyville's design and make it extremely different from it's classic portrayal, considering it's near ever-free I might have it surrounded by a wall maybe or maybe a desert in place of a forest.
But I digress, this will likely be a short post, as many of the characters positions in the world won't likely change much from canon. I may also make an updated version of this list as the world and story develops further and the next post will likely be focusing on the new elements, Politics or magic, regardless I hope this is interesting and enjoyable and any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
M!6:
Twilight Sparkle would still have hatched spike, but it would have been a test within her later school years. so he'd be a little younger and have spent most of his time with Twilight's family, encouraging her to spend more time around them and him. She graduated with honors in written work and something close to that in practical application and magical theory; Twilight was highest graded student in her year. She largely lacks a social life and comes across as something of a anti social know it all, who for her own reasons butt's into an episode/characters life because she's curious about the Element of Magic.
Still she is shown to be close to and cares a great deal about her family and Spike, she can grow childishly/adorably excited about something magically interesting, until she goes into heavy thinking mode. This might lead her to coming off as something of a giddy fan to the element of magic, or viewing them as a pony she wants to study, but regardless she'd find the idea of the elements fascinating. Twilight's would be employed in Canterlot as a researcher into teloportation and conjuring spells, we'd likely only see her once, in the boasting episode, or again if the cast was visiting the castle and need someone to explain something significantly important and magically complicated while Cadence wasn't present.

Her role in the boasting episode would likely be as a researcher who wants to study the element of magic, so essentially the same as L!verse if not as aggressive about it. Twilight get's into an argument with Trixie (when Trixie challenges her) and say's she can do anything Trixie can better or visa verse, but when no spectacular duel happens , two idiots (we all know who) go and bring a star bear into town.
But Twilight can't fight it because of it's magical resistance/transparency and Trixie can't because she isn't strong enough. The mane cast beat it up and send it home while Twilight and Trixie are embarrassed as neither could live up to their own claims, even if they did try, Twilight goes home and Trixie runs off. Twilight get's a little better in the friends department, as she has a lab with a small group of other pony researchers who have similar interests and intellects, so even if not friends, she's not to isolated, plus she still lives in Canterlot, near her family and has Spike.
Note:
I originally had Twilight there to conduct an experiment on ever-free magic and accidentally summon and ursa, partially due to Snip and Snail interrupting the spell while there, but that didn't seem as good and I couldn't figure out how to get Trixie involved.
RainbowDash is either in the same position as canon, I.E weather manager in Ponyville, or she could be a junior Wonderbolt, a stuntmare or racing champ, unrelated to the Wonderbolts. she may somehow be important in Cloudsdale, either politically, managerial, celebrity or in a militarily capacity. She wouldn't be very different from her canon counterparts.
She could serve as a rival for a pegasi member of the team (Lightning Dust maybe) turning up to test her metal against the element bearer for sports sake and then part way's as pals.
Rarity would be the equivalent of Photo Finish, except a bit nicer, she genuinely thinks she's being nice trying to make you a star, she just hasn't noticed the character hates dress's/pants and paparazzi. Rarity owns a large boutique with Everfree City, much like in canon but it has a number of staff and Rarity's designs are popular enough to frequently appear in magazines and so she is something of a mix between Hoity Toity and Photo Finish.
Fluttershy's is naturally tied to Rainbow Dash, and is also Gilda's friend. Fluttershy spent time around these two in her youth and is generally better at standing up for herself, she's still extremely kind to small animals. She has a sort of punk look, because why not? There is some decent pony fan art of that idea.
Pinkie might be the same as normal, or I could have her working in an entirely different setting, maybe as a conductor for a circus, a travelling performer, or an event planner she might be set in "straight hair mode" most of the time, but cut's lose crazily and sugary at parties, that she planned? EDIT: My current plan is to have Pinkie be part of a circus, she's often goes into what ever town/city they are visiting and spreads the word. She switches between a sensible suit and various other costume repeatedly and is generally herself. She meets the C!cast when promoting the circus for the Eclipse Festival.
Applejack is pretty much the same as canon in terms of personality her family owns a successful tavern/restraunt. the farm is not the only focus of their time and efforts, though they'd still likely have either apple/family themed cutiemarks, but farming is more background to their jobs.
L!6:
Trixie
Trixie's caravan is a large three piece version of her canon cart, but show is much the same. Trixie is still an egotistical braggart and even after the events of the boasting episode that does not change though it is covered that she's a performer and hecklers need to be put down before they ruin the show for everyone else. We later see posters of the "Great and Powerful Trixie!" in different cities and towns when they are visited and she's doing quite well for herself as a popular stage act and story teller in big performance venues. I may have her travel the realm/world a bit and then perhaps show up again later and help the C!6 out if they are in a foreign country, possibly being of some important to solving a problem, or just there as a nod to continuity.
Raindrops
I could have some hilarious fun re-making her as a sort of Cloud Kicker style, a flirtatious seductress, cool pony who can seduce any mare, as was discussed for an L!verse crack fic, that some part of me still wants to try. Or I can make her harness her strength and rage and be in the military or as a security guard, or strong mare. I could also just make her a weather pony, or mover, who only ever get's seen in the background, but often get's amusing background scenes, much in the way Lyra does, except her's are more based on being happy in the rain or being very strong.
Lyra is probably the same as M!/L!verse, she's a musician, married to Bonbon and we would probably see a performance at some point, she'd sit in an odd manner and often seem very relaxed when she really shouldn't be in background scenes.
Cheerilee being a secondary teacher, much the same as M!verse would probably be the best way to go but maybe university professor? But I could also make her a Gardener or have her in background scenes with Berry, probably cutting lose. She could also be a helpful/badass Bureaucrat or even the mayor. Some small cracky part of my brain, would kind of like her to be some sort of wild gentlemare jewel thief who supports charities, or maybe, just maybe Cadence's assistant. EDIT: As it stand I am planning on her being Cadence's assistant possibly having led a wild life only to as some point run across the princess and become her employee.
Ditsy
Probably the same as Canon S1, just with some speaking roles and possibly long distance deliveries. and of course Dinky.
Carrot Top
She'd be the nice background farmer, I may have some fun and change her mane color every-time she shows up, but overall I wouldn't have as much I could do with her. Or I could have her working as Rarity;s assistant or owning a health juice stand in town.

-- Twilight as nerdy fangirl / miss exposition on magical research via her role as official science director of magic seems cool enough. Hard to comment on the rest of what you wrote about her though as without context it's all arbitrary. Still, I can see how you worked to blend M! & L! here.
-- Not much to say about Rainbow, but there's not much there to work with either.
-- Rarity as some HoityToity/PhotoFinish hybrid amuses me greatly.
-- Not sure if you need tie Flutters to Dash, and for most of what your outlining it could be amusing to just have her be a nameless background pony (scenes occasionally mentioning a pink manes timid mare, but never by name). Alternatively though, I do kind of dig Flutterpunk hanging out with Gilda, and since most of what you doing with the rest of the cast is pretty neutral you might just be able to get away with it.
-- Again, there's just not much to talk about with Pinkie, though the circus thing is amusing. If so, would generically she have run away from home to join it or perhaps in this world the whole Pie clan are traveling performers instead of Amish? If her whole family where performers, maybe to contrast, they are all the puffy-maned ones and she always flat-maned playing the role of tragic clown or some such. Or whatever else you like, I'm just tossing idea up in the air here.
-- As for Applejack, can't really say anything at all about her, she seems almost more like the afterthought of the bunch (a position her M! self is quite familiar with). I suppose though it is just hard to place her until your setting location is more fixed. If you moved the setting to someplace like Manehattan (AKA the Big Apple) she could be a corporate suit instead a farmer. Or she could just be that regardless of what you do elsewhere.
So, the L6 then. Not much to say about Trixie, while Ditzy & Lyra are pure background material as laid out. Pretty much love EVERY idea you had for Cheerilee, and rather wish you could somehow do all of them. Not really sure what to make of the Raindrops stuff. CT is kind of flat, though the hair gag could be fun. If the setting changes to something more urban though, maybe make her Rarities hyper competent and/or ever exasperated secretary (or just a model I suppose, but something about her have to pamper to the need of a celebutant Rarity amuses me).

With Twilight, thank you, that's more or less what I was going for, in terms of blending and it's understandable that commenting on the rest would be hard.
Yeah there isn't much to work on with Rainbow though now I'm starting to think of making her a jouster, an Extreme Jouster!

I think I could just leave Flutters as a nameless background pony, though if Dash was ever seen i'd need to give them a background scene together. I'm glad to hear some thoughts on Flutterpunk, a name I love by the way, Not sure how i'd pull it off, but I suppose she could be kind to animals, but tough around ponies, maybe Gilda sort of defended her but also demanded she get tough, or just sort of started hanging around her and the development went form there, hmm Yeah I kinda like this idea.
I do like the ideas you've suggested for Pinkie, though I've also grown attached to the idea of her being serious event planner, right until the party starts, I'll definitely need to think on it some more. TY
Applejack was hard to work with I kinda like the idea of her running a bar or club at this point, but it really will have to be decided once a setting is put down, I've come to quite like a partial urban setting, Everfree City or something to that affect, heh maybe there could be tours around Everfree on blimps or magic carpets, I remember a fantasy series where an empires income was based on tourism from monsters, though as you said in the discussion when I mentioned Everfree City, making it into a bustling hub of trade and commerce could also work really well. With the L!6, yeah I didn't feel the need to change much with Trixie, maybe altering her character could be fun or just using her later could also be fun but it woudl depend how a theoretical boast busted might go. Yeah I couldn't think of anything I wanted to change about Lyra and Ditzy as background characters. Yeah not sure what to do with poor Raindrops I have some ideas as you saw, but I don't feel to much for any of them. I do like the CT hair gag, though I love your suggestion of having her work with Rarity in some form sounds awesome! and I now feel a need to have it be used, so thank you.

I really like the suggestions you have there, the council tourist idea, the city being a hub for adventures, living near giant star bears certainly would endear one, to some more crazy happenings.
