I honestly can't see this as a permanent thing. If this is a supposed "three-parter", there has to be a reason why two more parts would be needed. Perhaps she has to give up her ultimate power in some kind of show of self sacrifice. Besides, alicorns are nigh immortal, and Twilight wouldn't want to outlive all her friends by millenia.

I just finished watching it myself, and I'm more anxious than I thought I'd be to see what happens next in the show. However, when Twilight ended the episode by saying everything will be fine, I couldn't stop myself from thinking "...I doubt that very much..."
what would be insane is if season 4 is an entire arc about how she will A. slowly realize she doesn't want the responsibilities. B. have to sacrifice her wings for something.

835585 Hmm, you could be right.
I'm really glad it wasn't as bad as most anticipated. In fact, it was really good, what with all the cutie mark shenanigans and the Starswirl the Bearded stuff. After all, Starswirl most likely being a rather antisocial lot, I'd expect as a ruler he would be thoughtful and logical, but wouldn't have much ability in relating to the common pony.
I'm especially glad that it's only the first of three parts (the others being the S4 premiere); that way there's more drama and actual purpose to her suddenly being princessed-up.
Only thing that was a little weird for me: all the songs. I swear, we're almost hitting the song density limit for episodes. By the Season 5 finale, we're going to have everyone and their mother singing whenever Applejack goes to the outhouse.
Not that I didn't love the songs, just that we've gone from a max of two and a reprise, to five with two reprises. Oy vey!
