Something interesting I just noticed... · 8:09pm Mar 22nd, 2013
Alright, listen up.
Changelings. I love 'em. They're the main focus of one of my fics as well as several ideas that I have yet to actually write, and I love them simply because everyone seems to view them as misunderstood. Well... that, or mindless killing machines. Both are cool to write and fun to read, though I prefer the 'innocent monster' genres more than anything else. So when I was on the bus going back home from my track meet yesterday, I whipped out my Ipod (no, it's not an actual Ipod. Those things are expensive as shit) and chose one of my favorite MLP episodes to date: the Season 2 Finale.
Here's what I noticed.
Wait a sec...
... 'gains power'?
Yeah. Guess what? Changelings using love as a source of food might actually not be canon.
See, the thing is that if you take the time to watch the whole episode, you'll find that love is only referred to as 'food' for changelings once, by Queen Chrysalis. All the rest of the time it's simply referred to as 'gaining power', shown by Chrysalis using Shining and Cadence's love for each other to beat Celestia. So I'm wondering if maybe the whole 'needing love to survive' thing was only invented by fans.
I dunno. Maybe I'm just blowing the whole thing out of proportion, but that part stood out when I re-watched the episode. Could it be that, canon-wise, changelings use love to become ultra-powerful rather than to survive? Cause again, the word 'food' is used once while the word 'power' is used and shown on multiple occasions. Maybe changeling's magic is powered by love? Like, if they only have a little then they can do a few simple spells, but if they have a lot they can become powerful mages? Another thing to notice is that Shining never gets 'drained' of love. When he's released from the mind control he's perfectly fine. So maybe changelings don't absorb love, they just use it. That would enforce the idea that they only use love for power rather than sustenance.
What do you guys think? Am I being Mr. Detail-Freak, or could this actually have some basis? I wanna hear your thoughts.
I didn't actually take the time to watch the whole Youtube video, so let me clarify: Mumm-Ra has absolutely nothing to do with this post.
I don't like changelings.
I think that the Queen gains power, but normal changelings need love to survive.
I came to this same conclusion a long time ago.
Dude, thats very well thought out. To be honest, that all makes since. but, its probably best that it is used as substance rather than power. A whole army of overpowered changlings with intent to kill and conquer, yeah, that'll end well, for the changeling s that is. But yeah, thats deffinantly something to think about. and I dont see what they thought the elements of harmony were gonna be able to do against somehting like that. also, i agree on the whole "Innoceent monster" thing. It's better that way.
Clever, I always assumed c-lings were just a distant cousin of ponies. Also I doubt any author remembers me :)
You make a very good point. Maybe changelings can eat other crud and be normal, but "absorb" love to gain extra power. Or they steal the pony's power to love over time and become as strong as the love between the two ponies. This makes a ton of sense 'cause be honest, how could the changelings survive in the middle of the badlands off of just love? They can't. The must have a different source of food to feed the population that we saw. If so is love some kind of super food for the changelings or can they survive or of each others love but be weaker?
I'm totally with you on this man. WTF is going on with the changelings? Hopefully season 4 sheds some light on this problem.
