Character Profile: Derpy Hooves

Abilities: Has all the standard abilities of a pegasus such as flying and weather control. And while her eyes may make you think otherwise, she has a great spatial memory that helps her keep from getting lost…most of the time. Also bakes a mean muffin.

Occupation: Formally is a mailmare, but also acts as a personal messenger for her friend Mayor Mare when needed. Also had a second job as a mover at some point until resigning after a piano dropping incident…

Personality:
With a cutie-mark of bubbles, it’s not surprising at all that Derpy has a rather bubbly personality. Probably just as much of an optimist as Time Turner, she’s always trying to think positive and move forward with a smile. At times she can be a little giggly, and can often be found humming a cheery little tune to herself.

This can often make other ponies think she is a bit of an airhead though, but Derpy is the first to admit that she may not necessarily be the smartest out of her group of friends. It’s not that she’s particularly dumb; she just doesn’t have that same innate sense of curiosity or intelligence that Minuette or Time Turner does. Instead, she’s simply about average, except she does seem to have a pretty above average spatial memory. One learns such things when one’s vision is slightly impaired and you have to correct yourself. Because of this, while she might not get the timing right, at times she can be almost as good as Time Turner in positioning things just right for a surprise.

Even if she’s not exactly the smartest, her friends would say that she’s the kindest out of the entire group. She cares deeply for just about everypony, especially her daughter Dinky, and is always doing her best to do whatever she can for them. And at times, even if they aren’t necessarily wanting her help (she has picked up some nagging skills from Minuette). This does cause her to have a tendency to put others before herself all the time though. At times this has led to her exhausting herself from trying to take on too much, and her friends do their best to not be too much of a burden on her.

Her kindness means that Derpy is also probably the most empathetic of the group. Having been bullied in her own past due to her eyes, and some of the looks she gets due to her daughter, she tries her best to understand other ponies that might be having hard times as well. Her sense of empathy also tends to make her a little more forgiving than Time Turner and her other friends, but she’s not a complete pushover. When her friends and Dinky are in danger, she doesn’t play around, and breaking her trust by putting them in such a situation is an almost unfixable situation with her. At best, it would be a long, long time before she could begin to trust somepony who did that.

History: Derpy was born in Cloudsdale, but her parents moved to Ponyville soon after her birth. They were afraid that with her eye condition living in Cloudsdale could have been dangerous and so moved to the more ground-based town to try and be somewhere safer. For all intents and purposes, however, she considers Ponyville her hometown, having grown up there.

Attending Ponyville Elementary, she found herself originally picked on due to her eye conditions. She did her best to stay chipper in the face of it, but one day she eventually had to run off and hide from it all. As she sat there crying, one of the other ponies came to comfort her. That was how she and Minuette became friends, and it wasn’t long before Pretty Mare and later Time Turner were added into the group. While Derpy was still picked on due to her eyes a little, she was able to get through it all a lot better with a group of close friends.

Eventually they all graduated, but Derpy didn’t have the grades nor desire to attend any royal academies like all of her other friends*. Instead, she simply picked up a job as a local mailmare. She enjoys the job very much due to all the new ponies that she gets to meet delivering mail.

It was one of those meetings that eventually led her to briefly have a relationship with a unicorn stallion who had recently moved into town after finishing his own studies in Canterlot (on what he didn't wish to say as it was ‘top secret’). While very brief as he was eventually called away soon after Derpy announced she was pregnant with Dinky. The stallion never returned, though Derpy is certain it had nothing to do with not wanting to help raise Dinky. To this day, Derpy loves her daughter very much and continues to raise her with the help of her friends while still wondering what happened to him.

*Note: I edited Time Turner’s profile to reflect him having spent some time at a Royal Academy before dropping out due to boredom. Mayor Mare’s history is not in stone, but I realized she too probably went to some kind of higher education or work in government before being elected Mayor and so it would make sense for her to not be around for a time either.
