Well-said, Critic. · 6:09am Jun 5th, 2013
Been waiting for someone to explain this position properly for way too long, and it finally happened.
Sorta surprised GTA IV didn't get mentioned, since that was pretty much the ultimate reversal of expectations, for me at least. A game series that gets talked up as just mindlessly shooting prostitutes and running over cops with SUVs actually makes some of the most coherent, thought-provoking commentaries on the American Way (and the human condition in general) I've ever heard. Same could be said of Red Dead: Redemption. And if the same can't be said of GTA V in the fall, then we'll know for certain Rockstar has been abducted by aliens or something.
Still. All of my yes at Doug's points here. About time someone said this without sounding like one of those "vidya r teh awsom!!1! Halo 4 totes is beter den Casablanca!!11!" people.
I consider video games in general as a second life to live.
The Myst series was art. This I'm sure of.
It's nice to see it expressed reasonably and logically.
