    Star Trek: Nemesis

would have been a pretty good film if you replaced the Enterprise-E with 40 Miranda-classes

    Story promo for a friend

Been ages since I've done a non-groups-related blog post type thing, but a good friend of mine recently put out a story and I figured he could use some more attention.

An idea I've had for a bit

This is the part where I whine about my personal life and how school/work/family/ice dancing lessons are cutting into my writing time and I'm really trying to get stuff done but why does life conspire against me so?

So I finally started building a proper space station in Kerbal Space Program

which is not even that much of a challenge once you learn how to dock. I don't know what everyone's complaining about. Docking's infuriatingly difficult the first time you attempt it, but after a couple tries it's like... painfully easy.

Eventually going to build something approaching a model of the ISS, except somewhat smaller. Same basic structure, though. Long string of various modules with a crossbar and four pairs of ginormous solar arrays to power it. This is just the first two modules plus a crew escape ship in case they have to evacuate because the station is exploding.

Also got a rover on Minmus, which didn't explode (yay), and that felt pretty good. It's a really pretty moon, despite how monochromatic it seems.

Next step is getting some more Kerbals on the Mun, and testing out my Mun buggy thing which will probably not explode right away. And building the rest of my space station. That'd be pretty neat.

But that's basically all for now. Feel free to share your own KSP projects on this blog, or generally do whatever. I'll probably be catching up on some editing the next few days, because I'll be out of town, so... yay for that. Also OEE group renovations. Should get on that.

Happy trails,

Oh, I also wrote a new story.

1189756 I'm away from home and proper keyboards, so I can't really help you out right now because phone keyboards are tedious. If I haven't posted a proper reply in a couple days, pester me about it again. I've got a method that works (obviously).

3439302 Jesus christ, I forgot this existed. I haven't touched KSP in a few months. Broke a save file I really put a lot of effort into, and just didn't have the energy to try again. Worse, I was like just about to actually perform an asteroid redirect mission I'd dumped dozens of hours of effort into. The next time I sat down to play the game would have actually been the mission itself. If the game broke after that, hell with it, I'll get over it. But being left with the biggest case of video game blue balls in history took the wind out of my sails and now KSP just looks like work.

I might get back into it someday, but eh. Rovers on low-gravity worlds like Minmus are a fun challenge I'd like to repeat. You have to build something big and heavy, with a low center of gravity and a really wide and spread out footprint. If you just drop a Curiosity clone down, you won't be able to control it because the gravity's too low for the wheels to work. So the challenge becomes trying to get the obscenely large vehicle you build into orbit and then safely landed on the surface. This one was just the old sort of gamey "build a giant hunk of metal and slap a rocket under it." Now that I actually insist on playing this game properly and making everything fit into a fairing, I might have to get into a modular rover design that gets launched up in multiple pieces and assembled in space. That would be an interesting thing to do...
