Okay I am too busy conceptualizing my own story to even consider this at the moment... but I have to ask.
Why has NOBRONY THOUGHT TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS!? I MUST SEE IT! somepony write this, flesh it out, and top every Sci-Fi and space fantasy ever made... on second thought, how about a TVTropes MLP fanfic?
P.S. If something like this actually HAS been created, then I apologize for this outburst and beg for a link to such work.
