Author's Thoughts: Filthy Business

I just wanted to share some of my thoughts from when I was writing Filthy Business, so here's a little glimpse into the bizzare mind of the author for anyone who's interested.

I was listening to this on loop when I wrote it:

It didn't strictly inspire the story, but it did remind me that no matter how big of a scumbag you are, you still have a conscience.

Except when they don't. Sociopathy is something that really interests me, and I might explore that in some other story. I actually touched on the idea of a 'lack of empathy' in both Sleep Walking, and Just Like Me.

Also, reading this story again makes me really pissed off at my own character. Fithy Rich is a piece of shit who couldn't have broken a sweeter heart. Is that unhealthy? :p To hate your own fantasy creations? :p

Also, I'm surprised nobody has asked why Fluttershy is in that bar in the first place. It wasn't an accident. I don't typically put things in my stories 'just because it will cause sexy things to happen.' Maybe it's too subtle, or maybe it's too obvious for anyone to wonder and comment about, but Fluttershy was already spiraling toward a terrible, impulsive mistake when the story began.

... I just had a dark thought too. I wonder if I'll ever get a comment from some pegasister who tells me 'I lost my virginity in exactly this way.' That's probably a comment that would simultaneously fascinate me, and chew my heart up like it was stuffed in an industrial paper shredder. Things like this really hurt, and even though people tell me I'm good at bringing out the characters and making them seem real, the issues I'm exploring are things that actually happen—all the time—and I don't know if anything I could write would even be a shadow of a comparison to the real thing.
