One thing about me: I'm not good with names for ponies, not to mention such things as "what colours go well together" (hey, I'm a guy after all...)
thus creating OCs is a nightmare for me, especially when most of them doesn't play any mayor role in the story, they're just there to show up, say a few lines (the biggest offender here is probably Parasol in "Tools", who said exactly one word and died), put a red shirt on and charge forward to clear the path for the main character. So, instead of creating another OC (I have enough problems with all those bat ponies, crystal ponies etc.), I check the list of ponies, and choose one. That's how we got Star Hunter as a member of Rainbow Dash's squadron in chapter 3 of A Kingdom Divided:
And (much) later, we'll get Black Marble (did any of you know him? Me neither.) as an unicorn infantryman. 
(my initial thoughts for this role were "fancy unicorn, who looks like he's up to no good")
