TrotCon, Moonlight, and how to write professional speedfics

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who read and commented on Moonlight. It's definitely my favorite story I've written yet, and it was great to see it get such a positive reception. As far as a sequel goes, I have no plans at the moment, but I might revisit it later for a short story or oneshot. The dream setting opens up a lot of possibilities, and that made it a really fun story to

    I will never sleep

Looks like I'm starting another fairly long multi-part story against my better judgement. I know exactly what I'm getting myself into. I will probably regret this in a few months.

Anyway, it's based on an idea I've been working on for a few months. I'll try to post chapters on a fairly regular schedule, unless life gets in the way.

Stay tuned for terrible things happening to Scootaloo.

    Weekly Writer's Workshop

I'll be doing an interview at 3 PM (EST) today on the Weekly Writer's Workshop with Golden Vision. We'll be talking about that one story I wrote that a lot of people read, as well as tips for aspiring writers. It's the perfect thing to listen to if you're trying to write a story, but don't want to actually work on it, so you're

    A Cutie Mark Crusaders Christmas!!

I guess that "A Cutie Mark Crusaders Hearth's Warming Eve" would be more accurate, but it doesn't have the catchy alliteration.

I just finished a new story and submitted it, so it should be up on the site pretty soon!

TrotCon, Moonlight, and how to write professional speedfics · 2:35am Jun 28th, 2014

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who read and commented on Moonlight. It's definitely my favorite story I've written yet, and it was great to see it get such a positive reception. As far as a sequel goes, I have no plans at the moment, but I might revisit it later for a short story or oneshot. The dream setting opens up a lot of possibilities, and that made it a really fun story to write.

Also, I got back from TrotCon a few days ago. I've attended it every year so far and that was probably one of the best ones I've had. I got to hang out with a lot of great people, I spent way too much money, and I saw M.A. Larson throw an M&M at one of my friends for making a terrible joke about wings. And, thanks to ROBCakeran53, I was able to get added to the fanfiction writer's panel at the last minute despite forgetting to sign up ahead of time! Those are always fun.

Perhaps more memorably, I participated in my first speedfic contest. The prompt was "Sweetie Belle vs. Fabric." Usually I'm bad at coming up with ideas and writing a story in a tight time limit, but I decided to go for it this time, and ended up winning third place. Due to popular demand, I'm posting the fic here. It's nowhere near long enough to be posted as a story. I wrote it in 15 minutes (out of the allotted hour) and it's probably the shortest one of the competition, but I think I made every word count.

SWEETIE BELLE VS. FABRIC
A professional fanfiction by JasonTheHuman

"Forsooth and anon!" bellowed Sweetie Belle. "Have at ye, scoundrel!"

She stoop atop a bleeding pile of defeated bolts of fabric. As a skilled fabric hunter, Sweetie Belle knew that the best way to confuse fabric was with large Shakespearean words. Fabric is, after all, dumb.

Before her rose an army of minky, the most ferociously cuddly textile known to all ponies. It was this very fabric that had murdered her dear sister, Rarity. Ever since that day, Sweetie Belle had vowed to never allow a single bolt of fabric to live.

She swung her broadsword in an arc, cutting down fabric in bloody splashes. Fabric can bleed. Actually she had two broadswords. And also like a gun or something.

"From Hell's heart, I stab at thee, knave!" Sweetie Belle screamed. Then, instead of stabbing the fabric, she shot it. It's called the "element of surprise," okay?

She felt a soft, luxuriously plush tendril wrap around her back leg. One of her broadswords flew around, guided by her magic, to slice it off. The fabric's grip loosened and she was free.

The sword was also on fire. I forgot to mention that earlier.

As her coat was stained red with the blood of hundreds of bolts of fabric, a bright light shone and Princess Luna appeared.

She surveyed the chaos before her. It had been a very long night, and she had just dealt with one of Applejack's seapony nightmares again.

"I don't have time for this," Luna said, and returned to Canterlot for a much-needed drink.

(I also illustrated the story since I was finished so early, this is probably why I won)

That speedfic.. was awesome :rainbowlaugh:

I love the over-random style of it, and how it just keeps adding stuff despite being so short.

As for Moonlight - I am currently reading that, and LOVE it...
I myself had an idea for a Luna-in-dreams-setting, but MY idea was focused on Luna herself going into dreams.. I hav not started working on it yet though, I'm saving it for when I get better.

All I have uploaded is a "collection" of stories too short to upload on their ówn (like your speedfic here, and written in less than an hour each.. so I guess they are speedfics).

My plan is to keep at those for a while, and then gradualy start writing longer and more "advanced" stories as my writing skills improve.

When I'm done with Moonlight, I WILL leave a long, review-like comment with my thoughts and opinions on it (story, characters, settings, everything). I'm a huge egghead, so expect me to go
full Egghead Mode when I get there
