Third place winner of the Outside Insight Summer Fanfiction Contest, Moonlight Palaver asks a very simple question: how would the leaders of the countries neighboring Equestria react to a rogue alicorn threatening to plunge the world into night eternal? The answer, it would seem, is anything but simple.
Going into this, I was expecting a zany comedy wherein some non-pony world leaders meet and trade politely worded variations of “oh shit, what do we do?.” But Moonlight Palaver subverted those expectations; firstly, by going in a completely different direction, and secondly, by being outrageously hilarious.
There’s really not much more that I can say about Moonlight Palaver, except that it is totally fucking awesome. After I finished it, I sat down, waited several minutes for the pain from my busted gut to subside, and then immediately read it again. Taking place simultaneously as the events of the first two episodes, Moonlight Palaver follows one of the most memorable casts of original-characters that I’ve ever come across in a fanfiction, and it is about as close to the perfect comedy that I have ever seen.
I know that this is a short review without much substance behind it, but the problem inherent with reviewing a comedy (or even talking about one, for that matter) is that it’s very hard to discuss it in any amount of detail without revealing the elements that set up the comedy. and the same can be said to be true here. suffice to say, Moonlight Palaver is a great story; it’s remains my favorite story amongst the Outside Insight contestants, and is quite possibly one of my favorite stories of this site. Do yourself a favor, and give it a look. You won’t be disappointed.
