More Shipping Charts · 7:51pm Nov 30th, 2014
Well, it's been another nine months or so since I made my last shipping chart, so the time is ripe for a new chart. In the meantime, I've maintained a readership of just-under 20k words per day, bringing me to just above 19 million words of pony fics read. (Yes, I do read things other than pony fics; I'm currently reading Don Quixote.)
But let's review. First, maybe a year and a half ago, maybe longer (I don't remember exactly when I made it), there was the original chart:
For 36 characters, this chart worked pretty well. It's messy, but easily readable.
Then back in February I created the updated version, based on the Poincaire Disc Model:
With 42 characters, displaying data from 498 stories, this chart is still very readable and clean, in my opinion. When the time came to create my newest chart, I explored other styles, finally concluding that this method is in fact the best way to display large amounts of shipping data in a graphical form. (I have one other idea that I might try in the future.)
Finally, I updated my previous chart, and the result was this monstrosity:
Now I've got a full 60 characters to display, with data from just under 800 stories. (Okay, the kitchen sink probably shouldn't count, but I did just read a story (my 799th) that ships Cherry Jubilee, so I feel justified in claiming 60 characters.)
Umm, yeah. Wow. I'm not sure that I'd call that easily-readable anymore, unless the only thing that one is supposed to get out of it is, "Nikita has no life." But, let's run through the stats again, just for shits'n'giggles.
