Well. This is all kinds of suck... · 3:42pm Jun 26th, 2012

My brother has been having severe pains in his insides, but you couldn't tell from the way he was acting. After a few conversations (and realizing that he and his wife examined him and found a weird lump) he decided to get checked. He called a few minutes ago. He's got a hernia, and needs surgery. An operation that he (even with our help) could barely afford. It seems that no matter how hard he tries, or how much he plans and saves away, he ends up being thrown under a moving car (figuratively speaking). It seems to be a family tradition for us, but I know this happens to a lot of people.

You know what also sucks? My dad had a hernia, and so did all his brothers. It's hereditary, and I already have a herniated disc problem. Sometimes it just hurts to be alive.

However, this isn't about me; it's about my brother. He's worked everyday of his life, and yet— this sucks. I wish I could properly express just how mad, sad, completely hopeless, etc. I feel towards my brother's predicament, and I wish I could do something more than hug the man. I wish I could help. I wish... he doesn't deserve what's happening to him at all.

I just had to get that off my chest somehow. If there's anybody reading this, thanks for your time.

It's stories like this that make me feel that health care should be universally accesible and government funded. Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

I have a hernia and so does my mother, I know this might sound stupid, but it isn't as bad as it seems. The only real risk for causing anything to pop out is if you're lifting things above what you can handle (and Constantly bending up and down)

I've had it pop out once, and it hurt like a son of a bitch, talk to a doctor or anyone who already has seen a doctor. They can show you how to push everything back in in roughly a minute with minimum pain.

Though I am sorry your brother has to go through this.

That's actually good to hear.

He's a roofer (I count as a roofer too, but I stay on the ground), so all he does is lift things for nearly ten hours for several days a week.

I'll tell him that when he comes over, as I'm sure he probably has the same idea, and we need to figure out some things and look at all the possibilities and procedures.

Thanks. He's a strong man, but I'm not so much, so I think he's taking this better than I am. Again, thanks for your concern and advice.

There is some good news to his job, if he's use to lifting that much there is a good chance that won't affect him then.
If he's constantly crouched down he should be in the safe zone, standing up and down over and over again is what does it.
