Oh EQG 1, you gave us so much. A new setting, new background characters, and a new antagonist. It's just a shame that all of those new things weren't used in the best possible way. The new setting was underutilized, the new background characters were...just there, and the new antagonist was a nondescript high school bad girl we see in EVERY high school movie. As Amazing Spider-Man 2 showed us, giving equal billing to three separate plot lines ends up diminishing the impact of all three of them.
Which is a shame because I really think they could have done more with Sunset Shimmer's demon form, whom I've titled Searing in my story. As I've said before, Equestria is a world where strong emotions can manifest themselves into a physical form. Both in a good way with Cadance and in a bad way with Nightmare Moon. Furthermore, Sunset's transformation is very similar to that of Luna's: brief show of fear before being consumed by a dark aura and forcibly altered into a more malevolent form.
And then, there's Searing herself. The first thing to notice is the difference between her and Sunset. Sunset specifically said she wasn't a monster and balked at hurting Spike; Searing had no qualms with trying to kill Twilight. Also, she wanted to take over all of Equestria while Sunset was satisfied just being a Princess. Which brings me to my next point.
Searing seems to represent what Sunset could have ended up becoming as an Alicorn: a power-lusting tyrant who wants to control everything. Perhaps her brokenness when returned to normal represents her fear of becoming like that thing again, wanting to get as far away from that possibility as she can. After all, the slippery slope is a journey, not a light-switch.
If Equestria Girls becomes its own series (and it seems like it will), I'd like to see more of Searing. Perhaps, she can manifest as Sunset's dark side that hides in the deepest recesses of her mind, trying to tempt her back to evil. Or perhaps she, maybe through the crown, could find a new host, and seek vengeance upon Sunset for rejecting her.
Rose: I think you might be taking the Venom comparison a little too far.
Me: Hey, it could happen. And an internal conflict would be just the thing for the show to expand its horizons. As MLP keeps growing up, so should the subjects it's allowed to address.
Anyway, what about you dear viewers? What are your thoughts on the Searing entity? Let me know what you think.
I just last night pulled this story up out of my RiL list. Think I'm about 3 chapters in so far. So I'll swing back later for more here, I imagine. Interesting thoughts here though, for sure.
