Zero Blogs: TV Tropes part 1 · 7:57pm Feb 25th, 2015
This is just for fun. Since I don't think I can make the changes requested by EQD without breaking the plot apart, I figured I'd just make Tropes page for the story myself. You guys can feel free to chime in if I missed anything. Of course, I don't swear so some adjustments have to be made. And as always spoilers.
From a Shimmer to a Shine: Tropes
Adaptional Villainy: While the Sirens were dangerous enough in the source material, they preferred to stay in the shadows as their power grew. This version has Adagio actively flaunting her superiority over the Rainbooms and backing it up in a fight.
Adaptional Badflank: Everyone gets this to some extent, but no one more than Sunset herself.
Adaptional Wimp: Since Celestia ends up taking Twilight's role of Exposition, Twilight herself spends most of the story incapacitated or brainwashed, and is ultimately left crippled by the end of it. Word of Zero is that he tried other ways to incorporate her into the story, but they all ended up with her overshadowing Sunset, so he had give her a Worfing in order to spare Celestia, who gets enough of those already.
Adapted Out: Flash Sentry, due to Zero's utter contempt of the character and that he couldn't contribute anything to the story anyway
Adults are Useless: Played straight with Principal Celestia, but averted with her Princess counterpart who saves Sunset's life.
Adult Fear: After Adagio bars the portal, Princess Celestia ends up trapped in Equestria while her two students/surrogate daughters are at the Siren's mercy. The story even describes her as a desperate mother trying to protect her children.
An Aesop: There's one in there. Can you guess what it is?
Amplifier Artifact: The Dazzlings' pendants as in the film. Though here, they're also what keeps them so young. When they're destroyed, No Immortal Inertia kicks in.
Absentee Actor: Fluttershy doesn't get any lines in the story, yet has about as much presence as she normally does with them.
All There in the Comments: Infernity Zero does his best to clarify aspects of the story that aren't clear from a first guess. The most notable is how Twilight's Crown still turned Sunset back into a demon without the Element of Harmony.
Author Appeal: Zero holds Rarity in high regard and thus gives her a very sentimental moment with Sunset Shimmer. Celestia is this too to a lesser degree, with Zero determined to show the character the respect he feels she doesn't get on the show.
Big Bad: The Dazzlings, but more focus is put on Adagio as a contrast to Sunset Shimmer
Big Good: Princess Celestia.
Badflank: Adagio. Princess Celestia, and Sunset Shimmer once she overcomes her doubts
Badflank Boast: One for Celestia against Aria and Sonata.
"WHAT FOOLS ARE THESE, SO WEARY OF LIFE, THAT THEY DARE TO CHALLENGE THE SHINING SUN?!"
And one by Sunset to Adagio.
"The fires of judgment have cleansed me with their blaze. And now, they shall claim you."
Bookends: The story begins and ends with Sunset reflecting on her past. But while at the beginning, she had no idea what to do, the ending has her planning what she'll do next.
Badflank Bystander: Vinyl Scratch. Lacking immunity from the Siren's song, she still has the guts to wade through a sea of brainwashed students to help the Humane 7 at the risked of being thralled herself.
Battle in the Center of the Mind: Where Sunset battles her Demon form Searing after Twilight puts the crown back on her. In a twist for this trope, Sunset fights back the entire time rather than being beaten down and getting a heroic second wind.
Berserk Button: Unless you're attempting Suicide by Cop, don't hurt Celestia's students.
Twilight flies into a rage when Adagio beats down her friends. Unfortunately, this rage means she doesn't use her head like she normally does, and she ends up losing very badly because of it.
Bittersweet Ending: Sweet: The school is safe, Sunset's finally been forgiven, and Celestia lets her come home to Equestria. Bitter: Twilight's been left crippled after the final battle and can't come back with them. She's left staying with the human Pinkie Pie with only her crown to her name. On top of that, the author has hinted that Searing isn't quite finished yet.
Black Magic: Sunset confirms that the Siren's magic is this.
Brainwashed: Anyone under the Siren's spell, but most notably the Crusaders/Showstoppers, the human versions of Celestia and Luna, and (briefly) Vinyl.
Brainwashed and Crazy: When Twilight finally succumbs to the spell, Aria sics her on a helpless Sunset.
* More than Mind Control: While Twilight's initially immune to the sirens' control, Adagio wears her down by describing her friends in danger and leaving her to stew in her own paranoia. Without anyone to reassure her, she cracks.
Breaking the fourth wall: Happens once with Pinkie Pie, though this was later edited out. And once with Sunset, who sneezes during a narration.
Break the Cutie: Sunset starts the story in mid-break, having to endure a lot of resentment from those she'd formerly oppressed. It only gets worse over the course of the story, but leads to an Earn Your Happy Ending.
Break them by Talking: Aria and Sonata, a brainwashed Twilight, and Adagio all do this to Sunset. A brainwashed Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle also do this to their sisters.
Continuity Nod: Celestia references Return of Harmony with the five necklaces and big crown thingy. Twilight makes one towards Twilight's Kingdom in her letter. Sunset's memories before writing to Celestia all came from her personal comic: The Fall of Sunset Shimmer.
Contrived Coincidence: The group heads outside to the statue just when Celestia's coming through the portal.
Cerebus Syndrome: Things get significantly darker once Twilight comes through the portal and the Dazzlings kidnap her.
Cute Mute: The human Vinyl Scratch as according to Zero's personal Headcannon. She communicates with underlined text messages when talking to Sunset.
And that's what I have so far. Let me know what you think.
