I am now part of the literary canon · 3:58am Feb 28th, 2015

...or at least I'm part of the English curriculum at Princeton. Anne Jamison's course, "Fanfiction: Transformative Works from Shakespeare to Sherlock", will cover "The Magician and the Detective" on March 4. Thanks to Murcushio for telling me.

They're also covering “Luna, There’s a Sentient Race Inside Your Mane” and “Friendship is Witchcraft”.

That is pretty sweet. And I totally want to take that class.

I'm sorry, can we take a second to marvel at that URL that you posted?

This in-and-of-itself seems pretty damn groundbreaking. :moustache: Still, not to steal your thunder. A hearty congrats!

I'm reminded of when Jim Butcher found out there was Dresden Files /My Little Pony crossover fanfiction

That's a feather in your cap of a sort!

Congratulations!

In fact, that sounds like a pretty cool course to boot, going so far as to invite some authors to a panel.

I also like that it puts "My Immortal" as the first scheduled reading, and that not only they are covering "Luna, there's...", but they are covering mike's reading of it.

2836772 I'm not sure how to list it on my resume...

Congratulations! That's a nice bit of news, and on two fronts, yours and fanfictions.

I dont know whether this is awe-inspiring, or terrifying... 7 more Ivies to go...

I almost wish my work were in this, but I'm sure they'd mistake me for you, like people always do. :rainbowlaugh:

My hearty congratulations.

This is:

Quite fine, quite fine indeed!

Mike

They're also covering "My Immortal". Truly, you are reaching dizzying heights :trollestia:

But seriously, that's impressive

Oh, very nice!

The education system shall soon be yours! Then, the WORLD.

Wow. This is a pretty big deal. Congratulations.

That looks like a pretty interesting course. Congratulations!

All according to plan.

2837061 Sometime last year, I think? Or possibly late 2013. He tweeted about My Little Denarians and Chengar Chordath posted a screen shot on his blog. He was pretty thrilled, to say the least. Butcher seemed to be more in shock.

And then the next book mentioned that Maggie's bedroom is decorated with pictures of brightly colored cartoon ponies...

Looking at the reading list, that definitely sounds like the sort of class I'd like to take... Oh, to be a fly on the wall, to hear just what those students make of all of that! I'll admit to some not-insignificant amount of envy. :twilightblush:

So, any sense of how much of their reason for picking this story is because of the Holmes connection, and how much is just because it's one of your better-known (and, presumably, outside-the-fandom accessible) pieces?

ETA: Upon re-reading, I guess I neglected the possibility that they just thought it was good. Sorry! I think "The Magician and the Detective" has the highest ratio of how much people seem to talk about it (positively) to how big an impression it made on me, but I take that as a reason to plan on re-reading it more than anything else.

Congrats men, you deserve it!

You've hit the big time! :raritystarry:

So, how much money does this newfound fame give you? Thirty million? Two hundred million? :trollestia:

Srsly though, I'm happy for you pony! And then I went to add that story (which you did not link to, bad horse) but it was already in the pile. :twilightsheepish:

You've finally achieved critical success! Now you can sell out :ajsmug:

Seriously, though, congratulations!

...Huh. Neat!

Grats, brah.

The fact that "fanfiction.princeton.edu" is an actual, functional URL fills me with wonder and astonishment. I'm not surprised that such a course is covering you, Bad Horse. I'm just surprised the course exists.

They should have selected The Saga of Dark Demon King Ravenblood Nightblade, Interior Design Alicorn instead. More appropriate for such a course.

Wow. I...wow. This is...really impressive. There are now university students studying your work. There are offline authors who can't boast that their work is course-worthy. Congratulations on being picked, you've made a fandom proud.

Well done. It has finally come to this.

Congrats! That course sounds like one I would be very interested in taking.

Yay! Now I (and the Royal Canterlot Library) can say I appreciated The Magician And The Detective before it was cool. :coolphoto:

2837103 I think it was the Holmes. The course has a big Sherlock component.

Holy shit, that's awesome!

Thanks to Murcushio for telling me.

I may not have the discipline to ever write anything on my own, but I make up for it in shameless sycophancy and a preternatural ability to find odd, cool things and link them to the relevant people!

Congratulations! As I've mentioned before you have a literary style worthy of merit and emulation. I was going to speak about some specific points but my browser ate my last response and I must go now. I'll try to find this again later to rewrite my praise for your works. Suffice to say the fact that you're not only willing to experiment with style, but tackle some complicated concepts, was a central theme. Again congratulations on this and on one of your works being turned into a play!

2836744 And here I was starting to rethink my plan to conquer the world through fan-fiction.

(Ironically, one man literally planned to do that... and is doing pretty well so far.)

Wow, congrats! Think it might be possible to spin this into a historical footnote in future fanfiction studies textbooks?

Bravo. But have they included a classy author photo for you?

Spreading the evil one classroom at a time!

2840088 I'm thinking I should switch to a pipe.

Ah yes--I knew this reminded me of something and now I've found it:

Can you imagine? All claymation and analog bluescreening. They don't make 'em like they usedta...
