Zero Blogs: Plagiarism · 8:48pm Apr 3rd, 2015
It has come to my attention that one of the story's recent readers has flagged my work for plagiarism against the Rainbow Rocks source material. More specifically, the introductory chapter Unrest if not others.
Furthermore, this person has contacted the moderators. And while they haven't contacted me yet, it does make me worried that my work will be lost.
So I ask you dear followers: Considering my work as a whole, do you think that Unrest or any of the chapters before A Lost Light are an example of work theft? If so, what specifically raises the red flags and how should I make alterations?
If not, then what differentiates them enough to stay that way?
I don't want to lose my work, so any response would be appreciated.
If it is obviously show material, then it shouldn't be a problem (seeing that this entire site would be plagiarism by that standard).
Are you honestly surprised?
Look back at your own blog. EQD rejected your story because large portions of it are nothing more than a wholesale ripoff of the movie with extremely minor changes made.
Fanfiction is not about ripping off the source material, it is about putting the characters into new and unique situations.
Using hints from canon sources or writing a canon scene from a different perspective and letting your narrative be mainly concerned with something that didn't actually happen on screen is not the same as spending thousands of words writing down exactly what happened on screen with one or two background details modified.
If you can't manage to make this distinction yourself, then you shouldn't be writing. Nor is asking for ego stroking opinions from your followers going to help you at all if/when the moderators of the site decide that your story is plagiarism.

2943196 I'm not asking for ego stroking. But I have learned that it's always important to get a second opinion before making important decisions. After all, only a fool relies on himself 100 percent of the time. If I'm going to do something so drastic as a rewrite, I'd prefer to get a second opinion before doing so. That's all.
