Don Blueth is trying to make movies again! · 5:25pm Nov 17th, 2015

...And sadly its another gosh-darned Dragon's Lair thing instead of any of his good or interesting stuff. :fluttershbad:

Name sound vaguly familiar?

Any bells ringing now?

(Not pictured, my personal favorite of his work: Bartok the Magnificent. No, I am not kidding. Know it was direct-to-video and a bit cheaper than Anastasia, but I'm still a bit bummed it got left out. A very charming little movie with a old-school fairy-tale plot, and it saddens me so few seem to remember it. :pinkiesad2:)

(Still, at least Rock A Doodle got some love! Near wore out the video store copy of that one when I was a kid. :pinkiehappy:)

Anyway, as much as I personally think the subject of 'Dragon's Lair: The Movie' is a bit like somebody tried using a monkey's paw to bring back Don Blueth's carer after the flopped and flawed if interesting Titan, A.E. I thought I'd spread the word.

The Kickstarter will be running for eight more days if any of you are interested.

The movie names are certainly a lot more familiar to me than his. Ironically enough, I don't think I liked even a single one of them. Anastasia was OK, but I remember it mostly for Rasputin's song.

I couldn't even tell you what it was that I disliked about them. I watched a number of them back when they were new-ish and they just never clicked with me. Something about them just doesn't work.

Oh, and a bit extra since it will be asked?

I'm in the 0,001% that can't stand Secret of Nimn.

The thing bored me to tears as a kid, and the only scene that stuck with me was the lab one. Litterally the only thing I remember about Nimn is seeing that scene and thinking: 'Couldn't we have gotten to see more of this story instead?'

The lab rats being given near human level intelligence, I mean.

Was weird even back then, but I'd much rather have heard more of that story.

Don Blueth is one of those creators that's near always flawed some way, but puts a lot of heart into the stuff he works on.

You can always tell it's his story, and that he made the team give 110%, so even when the end-result is flawed its still unique and interesting.

Think that's what I like about him, at least. He's one of those artist that does what he does because he loves it, not a pay-check.

"Secret of NIMH" is one of those movies that I have seen done better in an entirely different story. It's a book by Akif Pirincci called Felidae. It's amazing, one of the best things I've ever read and I thoroughly recommend it. Seriously. Look it up.

That said, I'm aware a lot of people love his movies and I wouldn't call them bad, I just don't see what it is that people love so much about them. They just don't come together in any particular way that would make me understand it. While the enthusiasm and attention to detail is quite visible, I can never quite figure out why people like them in the first place.

Actually, there is a Felidae movie. It has this scene here that gave me nightmares for weeks when I was young:

It's very faithful to the book.

The only one I never saw was anastazia, the rest i had seen at various times. And enjoyed each. With more current movies, most of them just havent clicked.

Never seen Felidea myself, but I've seen Brandon Tenold's excellent review of it, and it seemed to give the movie a fair shake.

Seemed like an interesting and unique movie, if one with a subject matter I'm not particularly interested in myself. No idea how close it is to the book, though.

Anastasia is something of a guilty pleasure for me.

It just gets Rasputin so, so wrong... but gosh darn it, I can't help but love the unashamed warlock that movie turned him into.

Just one of those villains with so much charisma you're a bit sad to see him lose in the end.

Depends on which part of the subject matter it is that you don't find yourself interested in. The book is, naturally, a lot more expansive - it goes into religion, evolution, forensics, medicine, the relative perspectives of predator and prey, the true meaning and consequences of domestication and a whole lot of other things. The Claudandus cult holding its rituals gave me shivers and the finale is absolutely amazingly done, I'll say that much. It's more than just a simple crime thriller. I honestly recommend reading it.

To be honest Titan AE is still one of my favorite movies. I know it didn't do great but come on people, it's proto-Firefly, what's not to love? And then there's Cosmic Castaway! :rainbowdetermined2:

I've always had a soft spot for the rather obscure and derided 'luminous ether' style sci-fi, so I think I was one of two whole people in Sweden that genuinely loved Treasure Planet. So I know that pain.

Not that Titan is bad, I personally thought it was 'just' really decent. Most certainly not deserving of ending up as obscure as it is, though.

I grew up in a video rental store in the 90s that my grandmother owned so i definitely remember all of those movies fondly from my childhood. I always loved when we got to the store early in the morning getting to pick out a good movie and pop that tape into the vcr. Watching that review on felidae I am pretty certain I remember the box for it being in the children's section, was probably a fun ride for whoever picked it out for their kid, then again it seems like something I would have watched if I hadn't been trying to burn my way through the entire scifi section.

The part where it was really, really bad? Seriously, this is one of the movies on this list that I would say, without qualification, simply sucked.

3548109 Felidae is on youtube if you want to see it. I thought it was fairly interesting.
