When you replace two main characters with two side characters(one of which is widely hated) and make said main characters extras, should you be worried about back lash?

If the story is well written, the characters are well defined, and there's a reasonable explanation for the switch, not really.
Then again, it also depends on who this widely hated side character is. No one gets more bashing than Flash Sentry.
