My Initial Thoughts on You-Know-Who · 7:34pm Jan 28th, 2016
WARNING: THIS ENTIRE BLOG CONTAINS SPOILERS CONCERNING THE SEASON 6 PREMIERE. IF YOU WISH TO REMAIN IN THE DARK, THEN REFRAIN FROM READING FURTHER. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
So, the appearance and name of Princess Cadance and Shining Armor's foal has been published. In a short video, Twilight and Company are shown meeting the foal.
Her name is Princess Flurry Heart. And I have to tell you, pretty much everything about the 27 seconds of video above irks me to no end. In the interest of space, I will list out my grievances, and try to summarize them. Feel free to wage war in the comments.
1) From what I could tell, most of the fandom were positive that the foal would be an alicorn. And an alicorn princess at that. While I was among these, I still give Hasbro flak for going so safe. They could have made things interesting by introducing the first alicorn colt the series has seen, but no. I understand this is still a show aimed at young girls, but that doesn't mean that a swerve every now and then is unwanted.
2) The name is terrible. It's hard to give them crap over the names of ponies, since there is already kind of a weird, unexplained correlation between a pony's name and their talents/occupations. For me, I understand the "Heart" in her name, as that is kind of Cadance's calling-card (her cutie mark is a love-heart), but I don't get where "Flurry" comes from. The best I can figure is that since the Crystal Empire is in the far north, there is snow. But even still, I can't say, read, or type the name without shuddering a small bit. I hope Cadance and Shining Armor give their foal a cutesy nickname that might be more palatable.
3) Her design makes little sense based on what we know. First off, her horn and wings are disproportionately large compared to her body. Also, notice her eyes. They are not solid circles of color like we have seen in the traditional foal anatomy (think of Pound and Pumpkin), but are instead fully developed, with a noticeable difference between corneas and irises. For a foal that is theoretically days old, this is hyper aging. What they have to do in the premiere (which I assume will be a two-parter) is fully explain alicorn genetics, anatomy, and lore. And it better not be a five-minute Twilight monologue. As Celestia and Luna are already there, I want them to explain what is going on. In my perfect scenario, I would want flashbacks to filly Celestia and filly Luna. This would be a great opportunity for the show writer's to expand the world and history of Equestria, as well as confirm or debunk many headcanons (including some of my own).
Unfortunately, I do not trust Hasbro or the writers to do any of this. Once again, we as a fandom will be left with more questions then answers and it will be up to fanfic writers to sort out the pieces and make something of it. Yes, this is an extremely pessimistic outlook, but neither Hasbro nor the writers have ever proven that they are capable of creating the world-building and lore that the fanbase clamors for.
By Faust, I hope I am proven wrong.
Hhhmmm... Do we really need another Alicorn Princess? It would be more interesting if Proncesses had to prove their worth to be a princess and gain their wings rather than just be born with them ( think Twilights transphormation)
3718819 To answer your question, no we don't. If I had my way, Celestia and Luna would be the only alicorns (and, by extension, only princesses). This leaves many questions to be answered about pony genetics. And I fear we won't get those answers.
3718824 yeah, we won't
The only way I could think Flurry could work is maybe (doubt Hasbro wanted this) as in a Flurry of attacks which may be from Shining's side maybe
3718911 I honestly didn't think of that definition for "flurry". That being said, it doesn't really make more sense that way.
Ok so we seen an alicorn foal how is this going to work?
