Theory on the Gyaos and Iris · 11:10pm Apr 10th, 2016
We all know the Heisei Gamera trilogy, the Gyaos were created for whatever reason by the Atlanteans or the people of Mu or whoever they were, depending on the version that you watch. But for what purpose? Most fans believe that they were created to absorb pollution, since they tend to thrive when Mana content goes down as a result of ecological devastation, or that they were created as weapons in case of civil war, and thrive in pollution because the Ancients lived in a polluted world. But what if they thrive in pollution for a very different reason?
In Gamera 3, a computer programmer who worked for the JSDF, Shinya Kurata, and also likely a descendant of the Ancients in the same way that Asagi and Ayana probably were, speculated that at least Iris was made to let humans be killed by the Gyaos and that was what the Gyaos are made to do in the first place. The idea of something made by humans to kill humans for non-war purposes sounds completely insane, but one must never forget the elitist mentality. Elitism, as defined by Wikipedia, is "the belief or attitude that some individuals who form an elite—a select group of people with a certain ancestry, intrinsic quality or worth, high intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes—are those whose influence or authority is greater than that of others; whose views on a matter are to be taken more seriously or carry more weight; whose views or actions are more likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities, or wisdom render them especially fit to govern."
If Atlantis was run by an upper-class scientific elite who saw the farmers as nothing more than a scrambling crazed bunch of ignorant degenerate sub-humans, and if the elite noticed that their population wasn't being used effectively, they might conclude they had an overpopulation problem, and then they would not hesitate to create an animal to control their population size, because as far as they are concerned, they're dispensable. It sounds absolutely monstrous, and it is, and it might even sound far too evil for anybody to do.
Except that it isn't.
Sadly, there are people who are really that evil in real life. When Ireland was suffering from fame during the 1700s, and most of its population were starving, what did a lot of British people have to say about it? Did they say they needed more food? No, they said they needed a smaller population!! They said that it's only well that some Irish people should die, they said that they lacked sexual decency and overbred because of this, and they thought that there were too many Irishmen as is! In fact, some of the things they said were so monstrous, that Jonathan Swift, a satirist of Irish decent, wrote a parody of their words in a short essay called "A Modest Proposal", lampooning their crazy ideas by posting a mock-suggestion that the Irish sell their children to butchers for consumption.
Now let's say that Atlantis or Mu has a famine problem. They have a mass of farmers, factory workers, construction workers, all starving. What do the ruling elites do? Do they move the population to more fertile grounds? Do they plant vegetables that renew the Earth? Hell, do they go the Soylent Green route and feed them the already deceased?
Haha, no, even that would be too beneficial. It's a lot more "just" to simply make animals that thin the population with no benefits for the survivors.
But why the Gyaos thrive in polluted environments? Simple, because pollution is sometimes a side-effect of a poorly distributed population, overcrowding the entire population on one tiny coastal area would do it. The pollution "activates" the Gyaos, and they go in for the kill.
But the Gyaos work a little too well.
But somebody else with a heart decided to create Gamera to counter this, but the elites just want their population control plan, which Gamera's interfering with, because he's unstoppable, so what can they make to stop him?
...Enter Iris.
A common fan-belief is that Iris is a benevolent god, and only a true god, who's development was warped by Ayana's contact with him. However, there is a lot of evidence against this. First of all, the stone that sealed Iris' hatchery, the one Ayana moved, was said to be a stone that no human alive could move. So what was different about her? Nothing except for this: First of all, she hated Gamera, and secondly, she was a misanthrope in general. I think the stone could only be moved with hate. Would a benevolent god be sealed in a chamber that can only be moved with hate?
Didn't think so.
Also, Iris had genes very similar to the Gyaos, and they simply changed as time wore on. Don't forget the timing of Iris' hatching, it seemed to hatch when Gamera killed enough Hyper-Gyaos to be a threat to the Gyaos population, and he even apparently told Ayana telepathically that Gamera killed his family. Now would a good-hearted being of purely divine origins share enough genetics with the Gyaos to the point of identitfying them as family?
Didn't think so.
And finally, the full Japanese title of Gamera 3 is ガメラ3 邪神〈イリス〉覚醒, which roughly translated means: "Gamera 3: Awakening of the False God Iris". The title's shorter version in Japan is apparently ガメラ3 邪神 覚醒, "Gamera 3: Awakening of the False God". This term in the title, 邪神, is usually translated as "false god" or "evil god", but a much more precise translation might be "heretical god". Now this is the Shinto religion we're talking about. It has a much more narrow definition of a "heretical god" than Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, or most religions for that matter. So if they say it's a heretical god, they mean it's a heretical god!! (I guess that makes Iris something like L. Ron Hubbard, a Head of the Church of "Gyaosology", and then Gamera flies in and says "but that's heresy! Hail the Emperor!") Would something that is a real god that was meant to be benevolent be described under the Japanese term used for false deities that lead people astray to something completely untrue??
Didn't think so.
Just because Iris is mystical, doesn't mean that it's natural, and even if it was natural, Iris was clearly always evil. It was always meant to kill Gamera. A lot of folklore involves people making artificial beings through mystical means. Iris is probably not much of an exception. Since Iris "activated" after Gamera killed two Hyper-Gyaos, and was released by a girl who hated Gamera, Iris was probably created so that the Atlantean elites could get rid of that pesky Gamera and get on with their population control plan...which worked too well and eventually, the Ancients were rendered extinct.
Oops.
And that's my theory!
