Apropos of nothing, at least nothing that will bear fruit any time soon, I've decided that Pinkie is of German ancestry. Not just any German, mind you, but specifically those of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Why Pennsylvania Dutch? Because of two things: the Rock farm and the dessert shop.
First the rock farm. Isn't it curious that Pinkie's family look Mennonite? I originally thought this was simply to contrast Pinkie's bright color and jovial personality with their ascetic nature, but now?
It's interesting that there are two types of Pennsylvania Dutch, the 'fancy' Dutch, and the 'plain' Dutch. (It might also be appropriate to mention that the 'Dutch' in Pennsylvania Dutch is actually a corruption of Deutsch, i.e. German.). The 'plain' Dutch were largely anabaptists, who, oddly enough, were Mennonites who eschewed overly decorative clothing and buildings, as well as over-dependence on technology.
So we see the first link: the anabaptist/Amish/Mennonite culture. So, what, you might ask, does Sugarcube Corner have to do with anything? You might ask that. Well, I'll tell you. One of the things that the Pennsylvania Dutch are known for is their cooking, and their baking in particular. What kind of foods are they known for? How about angel food cake, apple dumplings, funnel cakes, shoofly pie, sugar cookies, and whoopie pies. Not good enough? Then what do you think of Apple butter, gingerbread, baked apple, and pretzels. Pretzels. Ever had a pretzel? I think you have.
So the Pennsylvania Dutch can bake. There may not be cupcakes on that list, but I think it's fair to say that Pinkie has made a few things on that list. Besides, a girl's allowed to branch out, isn't she?
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this was no mere throw-away joke. This was a genius cultural reference.
I just made this connection, and I exist in an interesting nexus of living not too far from Amish folk, and loving cooking shows. The fact that I just figured this out now might just mean I'm slow. I accept that.
So, tell me... Does this make sense to you? Was this obvious, and I'm just dense? What do you think?
Either way, that Pinkie's last name is actually Peitz, and 'Pinkie Pie' is just a nickname is now forever part of my head canon.
I'm really quite taken with this idea. Do you mind if I make some reference to it in a story at some point?
