Today, our dorm held a flag visual. For all those outside the U.S., today is September 11, the day that the World Trade Centers, among other buildings, were destroyed. Today, in the U.S., is Patriot Day.
As we looked upon the flag at half mast, I wondered, "What do U.S. solders fight for? Do they fight for political leaders? No, we call our politicians evil, they do not fight for that. Do they fight to keep our economy flowing? No, for filthy lucre that doth corrupt has not corrupted them. Do they fight for their own glory? No, for many die nameless for our nation. Why do they fight? Why would they put their lives on the line? Could it be something bigger than us, than all of us? Could it perhaps be a love for their family and their country? Could it be for the ideals we have worked so hard to achieve are too precious for us to surrender? Could it be that even though the reason wars are fought are for the most petty reasons, that even thought history has show that we as nations are possibly the most corrupt and sinful institution on the face of the earth, that even thought we turn into monsters, that they fight for the undying ideas of freedom, the love of persons, and for the love of one another; that they fight not only to secure their own safety and the safety of their families, but also for the safety of unseen millions. Maybe one day we as nations will see the reasons why solders fight. Maybe we the people will understand why they fight.
While we think upon the events of 9/11, I challenge you not to think upon things of the body or of things of the mind, but upon things of thy soul. I challenge you not only to feel the pain an suffering inflicted eleven years ago, but to focus on a hope for humanity, that one day the wrongs will be made right, that we may learn and grow. That we may never repeat the mistakes of the past.
Always Sincerely,
The Music Man
