Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria . . .

. . . there lived a lonely unicorn filly named Sparkler.

Sparkler was not like most fillies. Unlike other children her age, Sparkler didn’t have a mother, or a father, or a family to love and call her own.

Sparkler was an orphan.

Because she had no family, Sparkler didn’t live in her own home. Instead, Sparkler lived in a big house, covered in vine, on a lonely hill in the middle of Canterlot, along with dozens of other orphans just like her.

This house, which was known as an orphanage, was owned by a loving, older mare named Mrs. Hopewell. Mrs. Hopewell looked after everypony living in the orphanage. Every day, Mrs. Hopewell would bathe, dress, feed, teach, and play with every orphan foal, as she loved all of them and wanted them to be happy.

While Mrs. Hopewell did love every orphan under her care, her fondest wish was that each foal would find a family and a home to call their own. To help them, every Sunday Mrs. Hopewell would put pretty dresses on all the fillies and snappy ties on all the colts. She then would take everypony outside to play where grown-ups without children could see them and come to visit.

Every Sunday, the fillies and colts of the orphanage trotted down the stairs of the house and out into the yard, waiting for their new mothers or fathers to find them. And every Sunday, grown-up ponies would come to the house and take one or two of the orphan foals to their new homes.

But nopony ever came for Sparkler . . .
