Pokemon, Any Pony? · 2:13am Oct 5th, 2012
Personally, I think that a good story can be portrayed by and media: movies, video games, TV shows, magazines, news, books, short stories, internet sites.
What you need to do is when you are enjoying these things is go back and ask yourself what makes them so irresistible. Better yet, when you absolutely hate something, ask yourself why you hate it. Better yet, when you absolutely hate something, and every pony else loves it, ask yourself why you hate it and why every pony else loves it.
For me, I absolutely hate Pokemon. Yes, I have no love for either the show or the video games. They both use a hackneyed format that has not changed since I was 6 years old.
But when I asked myself why others liked it, I could only come to one conclusion: the little animal characters are freakin' cute. So cute, that it has propelled this otherwise failure of a story into the next generation, and who knows when it will stop.
Lesson here: if you are creating a kid's show, all you need is good animation, and the rest you can take from cans.
Why does this have to do with writing? I don't know, I guess you can figure that one out.
