The thing I said about not rewriting? Forget it. · 4:45pm Aug 28th, 2017

TLDR: I’m going to rewrite sizable parts of Corrigenda. Current readers won’t need to reread anything, though.

My last blog post was about how it was disrespectful to readers to rewrite a story while it’s in progress when the need to rewrite is a result of the author’s poor planning. To make that general statement specific to me, there’s a couple of plot elements in Corrigenda that I’ve introduced, but haven’t made good use of in the rest of the story. After The Perfect Pear aired, I considered using the new canon about Bright Mac as a cover to also get rid of those underused plot elements, in particular the stuff about Rarity’s lawyer(s) and Apple Bloom’s backstory. I decided against it because Season 7 could introduce more canon changes that affect Corrigenda, which would lead to more rounds of rewriting, which would to someone who started reading back in November ending up with a completely different story by the end. That felt unfair to readers, and truthfully, also like a lot of work for me.

The problem with that is it’s also unfair to readers to leave a story with obvious flaws. It took a unbiased second opinion for me to realize that, though.

I submitted Corrigenda to EqD after publishing “Trial,” and a few days ago got a response. While it’s not ready to post, the pre-reader gave me a lot of great feedback. In addition to flagging the underused plot elements and remaining typos, the pre-reader identified recurring perspective, characterization, and style issues. Being able to fix those on a rewrite will improve the existing chapters, and learning to avoid them will make future chapters better going forward. However, it’s still unfair to expect readers to reread chapters as a result of my poor planning, so the rewrites will only be about removing unnecessary plot elements and fixing perspective, characterization, and style issues. As I don’t add anything important to the plot, there shouldn’t be any need to reread the edited chapters as long. In the next few weeks, expect to see all the chapters reposted at once, plus Chapter 8. The result should be the same story, but better written.

And yes, Winesap will transform into Bright Mac.
